Just put my timing belt back over the pulleys but it now catches the thermostat housing and scoring the belt whilst turning. Where am i going wrong?

I put a lever between the housing and the tensioner to pull the belt tight (as far to the right as possible) and then tightened the bolt. is this incorect?
You have turned the tensioner anti-clockwise to put tension on the belt. You need to turn it clockwise, using the large hexagonal section, before tightening the lock-nut. If the large hex section isn't visible, the tensioner has been fitted the wrong way round.
There is another thing it could be, the tensioner "prints" onto the belt a thin line in the centre where the tensioner doesn't touch being made from two "halves" sandwiched together I've seen people blame this on touching the stat housing, just in case the turning the other way doesn't cure it, not paid much attention to bow close they are on the 4wd, but know on my 2wd it doesn't touch when turned either way, looks nicer though if the run between the left cam pulley and the tensioner is parallel to the top belt run between the pulleys.

it was the wrong way round. I turned it around and tightened it waway from thernmo housing. it does now get the little mark from the tensioner wheel. I deserve the Tard of the week award.
No you don't, ask most of the guys above including me how they knew it was the wrong way round - believe me, most people have been there and done it just like you.
Glad the site was able to help you out, that's what we're here for

I've done much worse don't worry, if I had a £ for everytime I've failed to start a car after forgetting to put the rotor arm back on I'd be a millionaire now !!
