Default 2001 Courier 1.8td wont start

Hi, was wondering if somebody can help with a problem on my courier van?
I parked the van up a couple of days ago after its MOT and it had been starting and runing fine, went to start it today and there is no glow plug light, also when the key is turned to position2 the dash dials come on as they should, then the milage disapears, this then reappears a second later but all the lights on the right ( fuel etc) dissapear , the battery light etc on the right stay on as they should. When the key is turned to the starter position all the lights including the clock go out! but the starter doesn't crank.
I have checked the bits i can with my basic knowledge:
All the 60AMP fuses ok in engine bay
when key is turned to start postion it is putting 12v through the starter trigger wire
I tried disconecting the starter and alternator to see if this helped with the dash lights
The glow plug light came on as it should twice in the time i checked the van, when it came on i was able to start the van but it died instantly and reverted back to the problem described.
If anyone has any ideas i would be very gratefull !!
