Default Cosworth YB engine in a e46 323?

Not been on the forum for away but yesterday the engine on my run around blew due to loss of oil pressure. not to sure on the damage yet but im preparing for the worst

its a 99 bmw 323 with full m3 kit and interior, no one can tell the difference but it has always lacked performance.. now as the engine may be knackerd i may aswell stick a quicker lump in it to make it worth while.

now i have two options

bmw 328 engine or a cosworth yb depending on how hard the conversion will be and what the cost will be like?

ive seen alot of e30 cosworths but not many e46s.. im guessing the conversion carnt be that hard as most of the work has been done in regards to rwd.. is it just case of new engine mounts and joining props. do i have to use the cosworth gearbox or is the bmw getrag one adaptable?

cheers matty

Just fit an M3 engine IMHO

Cosworth engines are expensive for what they are.

i'd agree with Chip; unless you want a "project" as such - i'd stick a 3.0l m3 engine, 286hp as standard and quite tuneable if you want a bit more. lots lots easier than trying to get a yb to fit

wouldnt have thought it'd be a major job. Ive seen one or two yb'd e36's knocking around. Maybe however thats done will apply to your car. Didnt renton used t have a cossied e36?. Any one know about how that was done?

Wiring is easy too, its not a hard conversion.

Martin hadland did rentons one IIRC

Only issue I can think of off hand is if the sump will fit

there you go then. Get on the blower to reyland and ask for advice or cost for the basic fabrication. Be a cool car i think. I wanted to do it years ago to my 325 but sold it in the end

silky smooth 6 cylinder bmw or rough old 4 cyl cossie?

I'd go for a the M3 3.0 engine, 5 speed box.
Or if you are brave 540 v8 engine!
Dont bother with 3.2 as 3.0 is much cheaper, more reliable, and not that much slower. Also 6 speed box is a crap.
