Default Golf decision

right then seen 2 cars for sale....both identical

black 5 door mk 4golf GTI turbos

car number 1:

a friends car, owned since new
72k, service hsitory (no cambelt at 60k)
bodywork scruffy in places, some long scratches (not deep)
small crease under door rub strip on drivers and rear door
drives great
MOT till end oct
For sale as bigger car required

Car number 2:
at a local private dealers
100k 1 owner full history
Body work better than one above, couple of scuffs, scratches on bonnet
interior dirty
MOT till end march

right the first car has been offered to me for £2350....if i agree to help get a Jag back on the road. (or £300 more if i dont)

the second car is at a dealers at £3k.....i reckon i could get hime down to £2800.

now would you buy a car that you knew the history of, is still in use, or would you spend the extra money and get the slightly tidier high mileage one, i know the second comes with warrenty, but what are they worh really......?

opinions please

You may not be as keen on the look but the Bora's are available with the same engine choices ,are cheaper than the Golf's and actually handle slightly better...

i'd go for car no. 1 & spend the difference on a belt service & bit of bodywork.

I would go for the higher miler. 1 owner, full service histroy, just needs a valet by the sounds of it. Warrently aint worth shite imo but someone who has owned a car for 9 years and maintained the servicing (provided it is genuine and not mickey mouse) is going to have looked after it.

Before you consider either though I would have a good check around at what you can get for you cash.

regular oil changes are very important on the 1.8turbos,
the oil pick up pipe is well known to get blocked due to old oil which causes major problems including wrecked engines,

also if you do change the cambelt make sure you change the water pump aswell as they are also known for breaking up due to the plastic impeller.

where abouts in london are you?
i have vagcom on my laptop which would allow you to scan the car for any faults logged on the ecu.

also make sure you check the mot history on the vosa website as a large majority of these cars have had the miledge changed due to them being so bloody easy to do.

id go for car no. 2 if it were my money.
100k miles is nothing on them if they are looked after

I have a chipped 130 GTTDI which a great daily driver - look out for steering rack, and if you go for a diesel make sure to test on a 70mph road as the turbo vanes stick on higher mile cars that do loads of normal driving speeds, as soon as you get them to 70mph they go into limp mode to prevent the turbo imploding.
