Default crap ford KA fuel consumption

my dads 53reg 1.3 colection ka is gutless and feels like some one has shoved a banana up the exhaust

when i borrowed it to do a 175 mile round trip to fetch my gearbox i was having trouble keeping up with traffic at 70mph on the motorway with a slight hill and knocking it down to 4th did nothing!

i left with a full tank and used the minimal amount of throttle to keep up with traffic and it was duel carige way/motorway for most of the trip and when i got back it took £35 to fill it up again

i bunged the stats in to a mpg calculator and got this:

Fuel Cost 114p a litre
Total spend: £35
Distance 175 miles

Your real-world MPG average is 25.91, covering 175 miles using 6.75 gallons of fuel.

thats fooking shocking

is this normal ? or is there a comon problem that needs fixing?

Deffo blocked cat,had the same problem on my mk7 escort 1.4,eventually it wouldn't even go uphill!!!70 absolute top end speed.I ripped the cat off and it was doing 70 in third, had 110 down the motorway as well,it was like a new car.went from 50 miles to a tenner to nearly 90!!!

Pretty sure you could get an universal cat for about £90?I decatted mine but it was an old girl on an r plate and I never re moted it!!

I'd think second hand no more than about £50?you could remove the cat from the system and have a look inside.normally,if it's blocked, when you give it a shake you should hear it rattling about a bit,or even see big bits of it moving around in the cat.the car will start to sound like someones put their hand on the tailpipe to check for leaks.

is the engine a 1.3 Duratec on Endura-E?

If it a duratec the CAT is part of the Exhaust Manifold

it's actually cheaper to buy a www.stevewyndhamracing.commanifold and a sports cat, there next to nothing in the way of tuning in this country for the Duratec.

Recently replaced a cat on a mk1 mondy around £70 from exhausts unlimited in Norwich, Norfolk, might be worth a try, though I'd be looking at the lambda as well.
