Default RWD Escort Help Needed

Greetings,

I've recently acquired a Westfield SE kit car based on Ford components. I has an 1800 Pinto engine - any idea on what model the 1800 Pinto was used? - a 5 speed 'box which i think may be Cortina in origin.

It has a Ford RWD rear axle, which may me Escort MKI or II. I think it may be a MKII, as it uses the 19mm bore brake cylinders which were fitted to the faster MKIIs. However, it could be a MKI axle but with MKII brakes - I'm new to Fords, so I'm a stranger to all this!

She's in fair nick and runs well, but does need attention.

I'm trying to replace one of the rear wheel cylinders which was leaking. I can't undo the retaining bolts, and there isn't enough room to wield a grinder or try drilling them out. Therefore, I would like to remove the brake backplate assembly as a whole so I can get it in a vice to do this. However, in order to remove the backplate the hub needs to come off.

Does the hub come off the halfshaft on it's own, or does the whole shaft need to come out? Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Farty.

ondo the four 13mm headed bolts on the back plate. then you need a slide hammer as the driveshaft has to come completly out to get the backplate off.

As above, 1800 used in mk2 sierra, as was 5 speed box, shafts can be very tight due to age, can you not get a dremel in there to grind the head away, saves a lot of hassle.
Just a tip do BOTH sides, most likely they are the same age, so the other side won't be far behind failure wise, and saves any potential losing brakes!!

Cheers guys. I know exactly what you're describing on the procedure. I'll lay my hands on a slide hammer and get cracking.

I am replacing both - only one has blown, but as you say the other won't be far behind it. In any case, it was best value ordering them as a pair! lol

I'll let you know how I get on.

Many thanks,

Farty.
