Default Buying an M5 Pre face lift

As title, im considering an E39 M5 and prices for a pre facelift are a lot cheaper 6-7 for a prefacelift and about 8-10k for a facelift.

Ive read up that they have potentiol vanos issues and the oil consumption is higher.

Question is - how bad is the oil consumptiona and if you buy one with quiet vanos are they any worse than the facelifts?

Any other info on pre facelift greatfully recieved.

PS - I know this is a ford forum

can be anything from little consumption to 1litre+ per 1k miles or so theres more revisions than just vanos and oil consumption.
I a looked at a few pre-facelifts as i spent 3 years before i found the one i wanted.all il say is theres a reason there cheaper.

have a read at this http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=18

I had a pre-facelift for a couple of years - oil consumption was bad, and the oil is not cheap!

That isthe worst of it - the vanos issues are the same pre- and post facelift so far as I know other than a non-return valve alteration that prevented them from getting noisy early.

I loved miine, and it is still going strong with its current owner with over 120k on the clock!

The post-facelift have other good stuff though, like clear lights, diff rear lenses and a widescreen sat nav if you are lucky

cheers

I personally choose a facelift for alot of reasons and yes i believe its same vanos but diff rings in the engine to cure oil consumption.
Theres various subtle changes but they all work to make it better.
