Default Project budget track car

Hi all I have gone halfs with a mate and bought a VR6 1995. still alot to learn about them here are the pictures of the story so far
bought in feb 2010

and set about stripping it out and building our own cage

made some perspex windows and got some sticky tyres

manifold

coilovers and poly top mounts

de cat

seats

1st track day at combe where after 2 hours we were back on the trailor with head gasket failure. really chuffed with how it went before hand. people coming and asking what we had done as it was showing up some quicker cars

how does it handle on track?
i would have thought the vr6 would be alittle heavey up front to really handle well?

To be honest very suprised how it went round corners. I had a few people coming and asking what it had done as they were suprised aswell. one being a driver of a scooby one a 200sx with slicks and a regular on track.
the scooby was behind once and I thought after the esses at combe I would let him go. when I got through them he was not there and didnt see him again till he came and spoke to me later.

well been prepping to get a different colour on it

all primed, I done it my self with spray gun and the cover on it was good, I actually suprised my self. that was with a 50ltr compressor and a lidle Ł9 spray gun

then a guy at work said he would do the top coat with his big compressor and good gun. only thing was this would be a practice for him as he has only painted big marine barges before
and im gutted to say it shows lol it is orange by colour and definatly looks like an orange with all the orange peel!

It would flat back but its marine polyurathene paint so will not buff up to a shine.. as said its a track car and will no doubt see a some battle scars.
Ran the noise it makes really is good when on song.
its starting to go back together all black twin headlights and black grill. im thinking about smoothing the sunroof off and getting a sheet of 3m carbon wrap to put over the roof?? or just gloss black?

That's looking quite tidy now mate... I love seeing budget builds as much as the big money builds.

How much does it stand you and your mate in total now??

Cheers,
Grant

Love a good home spray job! Have you ever seen the Vr6 without the cylinder head on? Its such a weird engine, looks more like a straight 6 than a v6. Very very shallow v6.

well we done brands hatch end of last year 1st thought was what the hell have we done its terrible!!! all over the place pulling under breaking and very skittish??

after a few laps the crap was worn off the slicks and shitty discs all soon came to life and it was a bit of an animal to be honest.
The traction was superb, (maybe some harder springs on the coilovers and a brake bias to stop back end stepping out on hard braking) made for good fun.

it took abuse all day and didnt miss a beat!
untill the black flag! Chris said he noticed a puff of smoke, we went in and marshall in an M3 pulled up saying the smoke was a little to much and to have a rest and check over it.
We noticed a bit of a miss fire and the oil was very thin and smelling burnt.

We let it all settle topped up and went off out. Marshall said he would watch us and flag us if still bad.
I came in after 4-5 laps and he came over said that was fine a little on overun but nothing that would keep us off track
but with the missfire and oil as it was at 4pm we loaded up and the car went home.

compression test was done and it was well down (50-60psi) on number 1,
so its in to workshop to have a look.

Front end off

And ready to rip engine out.

Head off

Spot the difference on number 1

That's a new head gasket. I did notice a pinking when I was full throttle at brands.

will be watchin this

edit; Its eaten the fire ring, with the oil deposits on the piston as well....

looks like oils been entering cylinder 1 somehow and coarsing detonation, which in turn has burnt through the fire ring.

might be some other problems with the valve stem area? stem seals, guides?? dont know these engines at all so cant be of much help

Iv taken the injectors and rail off and the injector nozzle and seal are wet with fuel on number 1. Like fuel has been blowing back out rather than down the inlet??

I dropped the exhaust today and am contemplating side exit with letter box style pipe infront of arear wheel
ordered baffles for the sump today so will get that in there.
been phoning around to get prices on getting the injectors tested (flow rate and spray pattern)
I want to fit the rear spoiler back on so will be drilling the poly carb back window to put that back on
also looking into rear diffuser and carbon door panels with carbon center console with push button start and fused switches

lightened flywheel and fast road clutch on its way
engine out and engine bay de greased and cleaned

I shot blasted the inlet manifolds and belt tensioner and painted them black
removed the air con pump and got a belt theat is shorter to run without
bought another set of wheels with roat tyres so I dont have to use slicks if its wet.. dont fancy that!
