its the amount of solids or resins in the paint high solids are generally in the better paints and will give a better finish if used correctly but even the pros can struggle with this, medium solids if used right can give just as good of a finish and are less likely to give runs

 

High solids will be over 45% pigment content....Medium Will be 30-44%
