Default zvh engine

when i bought my escort turbo, it had a zvh engine in it, its never really run right so ive decided to take it apart and have a look, as its a zetec bottom end, it has the oil return galleys, these havent been plugged, so would this be why my engine aint running right?? whats the effect of not having them plugged and running it with them how it iss? many thanks

a decomp plate would two gaskets on, you would of seen it as you removed the head positioned on the bottom end.

If its running on three cyclinders and then kicks back over to 4, it could possibly also be down to cam/tappets. My tappets over piston 4 were knackered, they wouldn't kick in until the car was warm, causing it to mis fire when cold. Changed the tappets and worked fine after, (not saying this would be the same in your case but worked for me)

or down to headgasket failure or water pump failure, resulting in loss of water. Check head gasket, pump, hoses etc. If it was head gasket you would typically get gunk building up (mayo like) and your header tank would have bits of gunk in it also (where oil has mixed with water)

i would check the cam and lifters as well, if a lifter has decomp'd or the profile has worn considerably I would guess that once the engine is up to temp and the oil visc has thinned they would not function correctly and the valves would not open hence the 3 cylinder synario. Whip out the cam and lifters and take a pic.

I have a sneaky feeeling this may be the problem. Never seen a zvh with the oil galleries unblocked??? though it would leak everywhere?? Very strange, makes you think what else has not been done to normal practice ???

i haad an mfi erst which had the same characteristics as yours, this was buggered cam and followers, simple fix but that block needs them galleries sorting, give sitech/jamsport/area 6 a bell if you get chance as these are the people who can give you the right answers straight away to save time on your behalf

Not sure on the skim, just give it a good check, to block the oil galleries about Ł2.00 for bungs which you just tap in.

I never blank the front breathers as there is no need, because if you use a ZVH headgasket it does that for you.
