Most people look at you like your speaking japanese!

How many people say a turbo has lag.......its not lag, its boost threshold!!!

ok to a newbie cossie owner then i explain it to people as boost coming back through the turbo and being chopped up by the blades in the turbo, is that right?

yeh, when the throttle is suddenly closed the pressure in the inlet system has nowhere to go.

this pressure exceeds what the turbo is trying to pump into the system as it is now not fed by hardly any exhaust gas, so the inlet pressure pushes out through the blades in the turbo into the atmosphere.

Hence thats why you can normally make the noise louder on a turbo car by fitting an cone filter if the car didnt have a re-circ valve

Pretty much. The throttle closes and the pressure in the pipe can't go anywhere so backs up on the compressor wheel

so where does the term 'wastegate chatter' come from then? as it's a very common saying and alot of people beleive that is what is making the noise?

i believe lag is the compressor being slow to spin up due to inertia and boost thresh-hold is where the engine is not producing enough gases at a curtain speed to produce positive boost?

correct me if wrong...

Very true, alot of people dont know the difference as below so i mentioned the common lol

Boost threshold is the point of rpm when the turbo pushes enough air to reach a certain pressure(say 15psi)

People commonly assume that the later in the rpm it hits this pressure the laggier it is.

Thats a mistake, its called boost threshold.

Lag in its easiest context is the time when your rpm is above the boost threshold and you come off the throttle, you then reapply throttle and lag is the time it takes for the turbo to come back to full pressure.

Some people quote this as 'response'

its the same as calling a vacum cleaner a hoover, or an mp3 player an ipod.

its just easier to go with the flow sometimes! unless you enjoy the sound of your own voice and like repeating yourself lots and lots of times.

i just enjoy the smug satisfation that i know better.

Ah I see, thanks for the explanations.

So is it lag/response that is experienced between gear changes?

exactly.

oh say you come to a corner, change down to a point when your rpm is above the rpm you normally hit full boost, press the accelerator and the time you have to wait to hit full boost again is lag

Take a Valium tablet mate if you are upset by that you wont last 2 minutes in the real world. This country is in the worst mess for 70 years & 'wastegate chatter' is causing you to crack . Perhaps a reality check is in order or even treatment .

All I say to 'wastegate chatter' is "Compressor stall".
