Default Escort XR3i MFI cutting out when hot

Pretty much as per title really folks, my mate has a 1989 G plate, MFI Escort XR3i cabriolet, which runs absolutly bob on when its cold, throuigh warm up to normal operating temperature, however when it gets hot, (as in hot enough to bring the fan on,) it first begins to cough andd then cuts out. Sometimes it will do it more or less as soon as the fan has been on, th other night he was showing me and it sat idling for half an hour or so, the fan came on three times, then it died.

The ignition module on the dizzy has been changed as apparently these cause trouble.

I have also heard the cold start valve can stick, but the car doesn't tick over quickly or black smoke, but would be happy to whip it off and clean it if, if anyone can point out where it is?

Chris was saying when it cuts out, if he undoes the fuel feed to the metering head, and lets the pressure off, the car will then start.

Also, when the car cuts out, the fuel pump is still runs, eliminating pump/relay i guess.

If anyone has any suggestions or had a similar problem, it'd be handy to have some advice

You reckon so Boothy? If it turns out right, you're the man.
Funny enough tho mate, I wondered that meself, that possibly a sausage had got in there after he found two eggs in the fuel tank, and a slice of bacon under the spare wheel. Cooked obviously. But because it does it sometimes very its hot, and sometimes whden its very hot, i.e. its not 'regular', i think it could only be something like a cocktail sausage, you kno them little ones you get on sticks. Apparently if a Bratwurst gets stuck in there, they dont run at all.

mine used to do this if left idling for a while when warm. i didnt bother to sort it cause i decided to blacktop turbo it after i stripped it for resto.

But i still have the entire mfi setup so would be interested to know the cure as i plan to use it in a cheap fiesta when cab is rebuilt... Or an off road go kart frame i have...

Hello mate..... Series 1 turbo and xr3i run different management, also this thread is very old so you probably won't get an answer through this thread... Also trying to,diagnose ke jetronic ( the engine management i assume you have) problems via a web forum is never gonna be easy!!

However..... All is not lost, have you read stu's 10 reasons why ke is shit articles.... I will repost you a link in a moment.

This should at least get you on the way to understanding some of the reasons why it don't work!

Sorry hyper critical of me saying ke is shit... I actually love the ke. It was a revolution in the 80s!! Loved it!

http://www.motorsport-developments.co.uk/stus.html

You want to be reading Bosch fuel injection 1 2 and 3 and the read common rs turbo faults.... After this you will then be a pub expert and be able to tell people how and why they have fucked up their rs turbo !!! Lol......

On a serious note these articles are very helpful and should help you...... Good luck!!
