Best way to change a 4x4 cossie turbo ?
Right im trying to change my T3 for my T35. however i cant get the bloody turbo off.
I have taken the boost pipes off, oil and water, I have even undone the down pipe, but i cant undo the 4 bolts that hold the turbo to the manifold.
I have also looked at taking the manifold off but cant get to the bolts underneath,
has anyone done this before, best ways to do it and any tips more then welcome,
Note to Myself, (do not drive car before i try to change turbo, i have the burns to show)

Manifold off in one is easier imo.
it can be done.
May need a couple of different 13mm spanners as one may only turn it a bit,the other will get a bit more then,if you know what i mean.
Dave.

It is a seriously shit job
I got mine off by bending and grinding an old 17mm spanner to get more clearance, my knuckles still got skinned and my fingers still got burned
but it did come off in the end.

yes mate you have to move back/drop the downpipe TBH can`t remember if it took the alt off or just drop it down to get to the bottom studs
once main fold and turbo are off the car very easy to remove the turbo
like dave said yes all done from the top on the engine

You should be able to do it with the down pipe on,you will have to split it from the system under the car so its out the way.
the alt. should just push away from the engine to give you enough room to get in.
Take the fibreglass cover off the engine mount too,10 mm nuts,be a bit easier to get in.
you just have to feel the bolts and get the spanner on some and sockets on others.

bend a few spanners , you know you'll need them again , its a cosworth , at least you will be able to do it a piece of piss next time
they can be done , if your removing them often like i do , its worth while having the housing machined for quick release , make the job ( on mine) approx 6 mins off and on !!

We did about 6 turbo changes recently on my Escos - quite triccky to get to the fourth nut - left futher one, others you sdchould be ableto do withoutmuch probelm, you may need either very short or very thin spanner.

i havnt any pics to be honoust m8
i'll try and describe it thou ,
if your stood looking at the turbo from the pass wing, all i have to do is loosen off the bolt at the back of the turbo - closest to the inner wing, and then i have a bolt not a stud in the forward hole nearest the inner wing, which has to be removed , then the turbo is turned through aprox 45 deg towards the inner wing and slid forward and of it comes ( after removal of downpipe and oil pipes )
but i f you imagine the exh housing looking from above in its relative position to the engine, then the back two bolt holes are machined slightly larger than std and machined off completely to the back of the housing so that the housing can be slid off, the front nearest to the engine is machined into an arc , towards the middle section of the housing allowing the turn , the other front lower bolt hole is left std and is where the bolt fits.
does this make sence ????

When I did mine I removed the manifold, same as Dave mentioned, but Be sure to change all the manifold studs, nuts and gaskets as I had to do mine twice
A friend of mine had a problem with water coming through the exhaust studs?
Not sure if this is common, He used a bit of liquid metal in each hole before he put the exhaust studs in?? Did the job, been fine ever since
Anyone eles come across this problem?
Good luck mate,
