take it you've checked the obviouse like fluid level and then the brakes arent siezed and work ok?
could well be a switch or dirty sensor. perhaps wheel sensor for abs as the abs light is coming on?

paul mate spent 5 hours earlier.
phil focus - fluid is fine and the brakes have been changed , i changed all the relays under glove box for spares no joy, could it be pressure switch on brake unit itself??

i'm not very knowledgable about the electronic side of braking systems but this problem does sound like an electronic wiring/sensor fault or maybe even dash light fault...not ruling anything out here
if there is a pressure switch then maybe that.

Didn't your brother keep the abs units and ecu from his saph?
Try one or the other until you find the fault. Can't see it being a wheel speed sensor as that would bring the light on as soon as the ignition is switched on and will stay on or bring the light on as soon as the car moves if one isn't reading.

Just try the ecu first, it's the easiest to do just on top of the engine ecu on the bracket.
If that don't work, there's a pressure switch on the main pump. Just swap that over, if you don't want to do that, just swap the entire unit over, piece of piss to do. Same as the valve unit on the n/s inner wing, pretty easy.

How many ABS relays have you got behind the dash? I could understand and explain your issues if it's got a later 4x4 ABS loom with 3 relays, as opposed to the earlier 3 door and 2wd saff ABS looms with 2 relays.
