After 30 years model building I have found several methods to do this neatly but masking of the edges is unnecessary and paint will nearly always find its way under the tape in a few places. A steady hand and confidence is the best method. The paint has to be thinned so that it flows easily into the edges.
1) use the correct type and size of brush, make sure it has a square end and is long enough to carry sufficient paint to enable you to finish an edge with one smooth brush stroke. you do not want to go over the edge repeatedly as it will show the brush marks if you are using matt black.
2) An good quality air brush will make short work of it but you do need experience using one.
3) The easiest and simplist way is to use a paint marker such as a Gundam marker.
If any paint does stray outside the area, wait till it is dry and remove carefully with a wooden toothpick and Tcut.

i always spray mine, takes a bit of time and patience but always come out nicely
get some tamiya 6mm model masking tape, a sharp craft knife and some a4 printer paper.
dont ever use the actual edge of the tape, i stick it over the gap then run my fingernail down the gap to press it in then use the knife and go around it, press it in with your nail again and repeat till its all done.
the tamiya tapes 3 or 4 quid a roll so thats why i use the printer paper to cut into shapes to cover large areas, once its all done just make sure theres no bits where the paint could get through to the bodywork and give it a few light coats of flat/matt black
heres a few ive done this way

dont get me wrong a brush will work but it takes just as long and a good few attempts to look right, this is better i think

Hi all Paul here from little ol' New Zealand.Spraying as said above is The best way patience is needed to get the masking perfect but as you can see you get a great result, I try to use Tamiya/Testors sprays as all the others are designed to be used on a full sized car so they really spray too much paint. Also if you fill a tupperware container with hot water(from the tap not the jug) and place your spray cans in it the heat thins the paint it comes out way nicer.
If I brush paint these on my 1/25th scale plastic kits(of which I have not touched for a while)I use a flat modelling brush form the model store, load a little paint and instead of using the tip which will fan out and get paint everywhere you don't want it use the side it holds it's shape and lays down a nice line. Alternitively you could use a fat/flat black marker pen. These tecniques do work work!! Honestly.Go the Masking tape!!!!
