Default anti roll bar question 3dr

ive fitted a saph roll bar on me 3dr with some 8x18,s on, and its shoved the wheels too far forward its catching everything and looks terrible, i can get 3 fingers behind the wheel and its touching the bumper at the front!!!! ive just fitted a complete polybush set so the bushes are ok!

if i buy a set of them compression strut doofers and get rid of my roll bar is it still ok to drive on the road?? its got konis fitted,

or do i go for a standard 3dr roll bar

cheers chaps

it does make sense it being a 4x4 1 as its the tyres are even catchin the bumper brackets lol,
ive purchased a complete saff front set up for it and the antiroll bar was got seperately but was advertised as the 2wd cosworth 1,
do you think i should be ok with the saff 1 then or go for a 3dr 1??

i thought about the compression strutts due to them being adjustable, but was a bit worried about getting rid of the roll bar as ive read that every 1 who runs the compression strutts run coilovers!

cheers bud

The Sapphire 2wd one effectively lengthens the wheelbase on a 3 door with the original ARB.

They designed it so that it would give about a degree more caster effect on the 2wd.

I think some of the later 3 doors got them standard anyway ( like the RS500s ) and it was available as a retro fit option on the earlier 3-doors from the dealers if
a. the dealers were savvy enough
b. the customer complained of poor straight line stability.

How much clearance did you have at the front on the original ARB with your 8x18 wheels?

If it was very little the clearance might be tight as the later ARB will sit the wheel further forward in the front arch.

If you want the extra caster and you want to retain the big wheels wheels another alternative to comp struts/909 ARB is to use the top mounts that Mike R did a run of ( the downside being you will have to cut our your strut tops ). That will tilt the top of the strut back rather than push the bottom of it forward. I'd check it will work before you try that one though!

Just an idea......

Anyway, hope you get it resolved

AS indicated there were two arbs for the 3 door the H13 and the H14, the H14 was also the one used on the 2wd sapphy, a lot were changed under warranty after comments in road tests and customer complaints.
It does as said alter the castor which could also be done simply by using a spacer under the dished washer on the arb to sit it further forward, a lot inc myself prefer the early arb for it's better turn in.

thanks for the replys guys, im running complete saff 2wd front running gear as i built the car from a shell so have never had the 3dr roll bar fitted, the tyres are going past the front bumper??

does the 4x4 roll bar fit as said earlier?? i can get my hands on another saff roll bar (2wd) so i can compare the 2 against each other to c if mine is a 4x4 item!

its annoying me now as its nearlly finished and this has put me back (or forward as the case maybe lol )

thanks again

Hi Pete

I think the 4x4 ARB is different to the 2wd one - which one you have though I do not know

take a look at the arb where it slides into the tca on the drivers side, you will see the number stamped there, the 2wd saff is a h14 as said, the 4x4 is a higher number but cannot remember what it is off the top of my head.

I have a h14 if you need one
