how important is that piece? i'm running my car without that damper at the moment,
so what damage will it bring on a short or long term period?
just running on standard bhp if that makes any difference?

2wd or 4wd ? I believe the damper is recommended on a 2wd to save your exhaust studs from snapping, but it is apparently not required on a 4x4.
I am sure someone else will confirm or deny this though.

Very! Can cause your exhaust manilfold studs to crack, not nice to replace those! And also stops vibrations throughout the rev range, especially in the mid range area. The std ford damper is the one to use! BHP has nothing to do with the need for one when using a 2wd exhaust manifold.
