Default opinions please on mexico i.d. swap

i have a mk1 mexico shell that has been lying under covers for a few years, i brought it but the seller kept the id/book
the shell is in a bad way but now i have the funds and the facilities to rebuild the shell fully
now i want to put the car back on a mexico book, some people frown at this and shout "ringer"
the car was a mex anyway and i'm replacing 80% of the panels for new, im not building the car as an original mex i'll probably cossy it,
if i can find another shell with id then i'll forget this but i need to get started as i havent got the workshop forever

As long as you retain the original shell i cant see a ringer as dvla say over a ??% you can retain the id

it sounds like the seller cut out the vin plates, so he wouldnt know what id to apply for.

the chassis no. is stamped on the o/s strengthing plate under the bonnet. i wudn't have thought it was still there. so your shell has no id. buy an id trasplant it to your shell. no probs

I promise I won't moan about whatever you do to the car if you will start saying you BOUGHT the shell.

You may have BROUGHT it home, but only after you BOUGHT and paid for it.

There is a difference and I've decided to join the militant tendency that is growing on here!

TBH Mark1's are one of the most likely cars to have an ID that doesnt match the shell. I think most people wouldnt really be that bothered what the ID says, it's the spec & condition that sell them.

Just get some id and use it,dont worry about having no chassis numbers stamped on the strut top,my old mex had no numbers, it had new struttop plates and they never bothered stamping the numbers back in,it dont mean its not a mex,you can buy new top plates, just get them stamped first with the new id numbers and welded in place then get it painted, then get a new vin plate off ebay get hat stamped job done

are you allowed to remove an id from a car and sell seperately?

No, but imo its not doing any harm, his car is a mex ( so he says ) theres no stolen cars involved, there is loads out there that have done this but with standard shells, changing id to make out they are a RS is wrong imo
