Default Breather tank design...

If you want to get as much oil out of the vapour as possible, what's the best type of internal design for a breather tank?

I've seen some that are just an empty tank with hoses, which I really dont see the point of, some have a plate infront of the entry, some with multiple plates that make a maze for the air to travel round, others with a sort of gauze to trap the oil-droplets...

I want to have the vent to atmosphere, so want to get rid of as much oil as poss.

I'll have something made if theres nothing out there that will do the job.

All info welcome

Simon.

there was 3 ports in the top of the tank
1 from the cam cover to tank
2 from the 2 breather ports ian has drilled into the back of the block

then 2 out lets on the bottom
1 was a return from the tank to the sump
and the other was the vent which i left hanging under the car and to be honest never had a drip out of it , but i would fit a catch tank then with a breather filter into the top of that.

bailey tank had internal tubes as baffles but could not tell you how it was design as you cant see inside lol , but when i cleaned it there was only a very tiny amount of oil vapour.

heres a pic

hope this helps

cheers paul

What is the ideal breather setup??? Takeoff from rocker and takeoff from block above oil level with breather tank return below oil level in sump?

Paul, that looks pretty cool. I might speak to him about that.

I dont want a return to the sump though, but I'm sure I can sort that.

How much did that cost you?

Some of the ones on our machines at work are as you suggested, a canister with multiple discs inside that the vapour works its way up through. They are the most effective way for our applications!

Why not just have them venting to atmosphere without fucking about with a tank?

Like anything that filters the more oil you "trap" the more restrictive it will be. Why do you want to get the oil vapours out?

Our high end systems have a return to the sump and BIG breathers/baffles.

It seems very few people/companies actually get what a catch tank is for.

I want to get as much oil out as poss, as its going to atmosphere and I dont want to be leaving oil puddles everwhere, or have the whoever is following me getting covered in oil droplets each time I boot it lol

You mention your "high end systems", do you have any pics/prices?

What makes you say that, about other companies not getting what they are for?

i think it was around £220 but cant remember its that long ago lol. i also think that bailey motorsport know what they are doing in terms of design and what works. why do not want a return to the sump as this is what drains the breather and stops it from building up and then puddling out of the vent hose.
as i said i only ever got a few drops of oil and that was after giving it a real good thrashing.

cheers paul
