newbie
hi folks
as you can probaly tell i'm a newbie!
i have just bought my first cosworth,its a 1990 magenta 4x4.
its been loved in the past but now needs a little attention!
it has a running problem,if you try and start it you need to give it a little touch on the throttle pedal to catch.
it also has a light missfire up to 4.5k then it wont rev any further, tried a set of 071 ford plugs (new ungapped) and no difference.
can anybody help?
car seems to be stage 2,filter,exhaust,actuator and green injectors.
sorry for the big first post but hopefully this is a friendly place!

I found when i joined this site that people didn't have a lot of contact with me at first but after a while people get to know you.. good luck with the cossie mate
Hi there welcome to PF theres an abudance of info on here your in good hands , i dont know what may cause your running issues but your best to get the car seen by a proffesional for a setup as theres lots of things that can go wrong. dont get put off by it they are superb cars and deserve lots of attention especially if you dont know its history
Hello and welcome.
When the car is started with throttle assistance does it stop if shut if so most likely ISCV, as your problem sounds fuel related I won't touch on the ISCV as the below may sort both.
Besides the plugs which you have changed and to one of the best ones possible as well (071's), what gap have you set? the rest of the ignition system needs to be in perfect order on these as it's not great. I.E Rotor arm, ignition leads. Also good idea to change fuel filter, this is often overlooked. Other thing it could be is CTS but do the above simple checks first. Do you get black smoke out?
Most important thing of all is to make sure fans work, should be rewired ideally if not already done, same applies for fuel pump.

aye,had read about the rewiring jobs to the pump and fans, the plug gap was not checked sorry, rotor arm and dizzy cap on its way,
yes do get some black reek and old plugs were black from being rich.
sorry but what is the cts?
cheers for the replies so far

CTS (Coolant temperature sensor) at back of head under plenum, is tricky to get at it's a thermister that provides the ECU with info on coolant temperature from 0 degrees to boiling these do go out of calibration after a while and hence give false readings leading to rich mixture.
Forgot to say in last post but a common one, check the MAP sensor hose, under header tank beneath a fender this connects to the plenum. These can simply come off (It's a good idea to cable tie for this reason) when they do they run very rich, if not this they also split!
Same applied to fuel pressure regulator if this comes off though you go to other extreme of leaniness and could lose engine so again good to make sure it's in good condition/connected.

Looks good condition, I like the standard lattice wheels you have, someone had different alloys before and probably put originals back on when they sold, looks like a 4 spoke RS wheel more commonly there 7.

Hey it was late at night and I was tired, as you say 5 spoke don't know why I imagined 4, can't blame alcohol either! I can't get the codes for the older head units only for modern ones but sure someone can.

thanks folks
so in today, sensors ,leads, dizzy etc are showing up fine, runs better when the map sensor is disconnected and the injector duration goes mad when its reconnected., so he is thinking either map sensor or the chip itself.
on my first decent drive of it today,it ticks over at 2 k when warm, and doesn't seem to be boosting much,no boost guage (yet) so dont know what its doing.
but its deffo over fuelling.
any thoughts?
