RWD XR4X4
i recently been given an sierra xr 4x4 from a friend .and i was thinking about fitting a 24v cosworth engine and converting it to RWD. has anyone got any advice or info on doin this, and wot kind of costs r involved .cheers for any info
i wouldnt say its a hard hard job at all, quite the oppisite infact, as you have nearly the best base sierra to do it too.
buy a 24v engine and loom, and a 2wd sierra front crossmember and assosiated parts, hubs ect. put the engine on the subframe. take your 4wd v6 gearbox and get a twincam sierra rear gearbox half put onto it. put your flywheel and a transit clutch onto the engine and job done, very easy and cheap!

I'm not in a mega rush as I'm needing the bits for a 24V 4x4 Puma Rally Car Im starting to build, but I'll happily buy everything 4x4 that you dont want if the price is reasonable. I'm gonna need spares as I'm using it for competition.
I put a 24V into a 4x4 Sapphire a few years back so if I can be any help to you pm me, know the conversions well.
I'm a semi retired garage owner who used to specialise in trasmissions, and Hi Perf conversions. Have done loads with these engines.
Have just finished building a new workshop (ramp etc), at our new home in Scotland, so hence the project to keep me fingers from being idle lol.

nice one mate, ive also got a mk2 astra gte with a 2.5 V6 24v but that was simple too fit 2b honest, just never worked on fords before and the 4wd system looks complicated too me.and if u can cum across afew of the bits i need, cud just do straight swop. cheers
Astra sounds awesome. I love small / light cars with big power.
If you're used to the Vauxhall, then you'll find the Fords really easy to work on, much better "bolt on" interchangeability.
As far as I can see / remember what you're gonna need is a complete Engine, ECU, and Engine Loom. I can supply all of these. Quite happy with a straight swap, if you can meet me somewhere around the border, both of us with a trailer full of goodies it would help lol.
After this a busted 4x4 gearbox would be better as you only need the front casing (bellhousing), but if not I have the special sockets to swap one for you off the good gearbox.
You'll also need a 2wd Manual MT75 Gearbox, gearbox crossmember, and late sierra 2WD rear Prop. You'll also need a 2wd Sierra front Xmember and suspension, rollbar, hubs etc. If you can, buying a cheap 2.0 Sierra with MT75 gearbox ('G' reg onwards I think), will give you all these bits. Or find someone with a breaker they haven't started stripping.
Your existing Exhaust system will fit with a slight mod at the downpipes (very easy). Also you radiator and hoses are all fine if they're in good nick. The wiring is the biggest job, but again most of it is swapping pins over in the 4x4 Sierra ECU plug and adding a few extra wires for Lambdas and Edis Ignition.
Like I say 99% of this job is nuts and bolts and the exhaust is only 1/2 hour with a Mig welder lol.
If you can, some homework is to get the 24V Engine ECU wiring diagram and the 4x4 wiring diagram, I've got 'em somewhere in a box but still haven't unpacked half my boxes since we moved up 3 years ago lol.
Having driven both 4x4 and 2wd 24V Sierras the 2wd is def more fun and less complicated !! Also an easier conversion as you dont need to mod the 4x4 sump for the head oil returns, and theres a lot more space in the lower engine bay !!
Let me know when you want me to sort out the bitz, have sent you a pm with my phone numbers.
HTH,
Regards Dave
