Evening all,

Just a quick question to help me in my decision as to whether or not my mondeo is about to become my new project.

I have a 2.0 Mondeo Mk3 with the duratec he engine and the standard 4speed auto box.

I was wondering if it would be possible to swap out the 4 speed for the 5 speed tiptronic box that was used in the later models (facelift )??

I'm not to concerned about it being cost effective as such, it's just that I'm aware that the Tiptronic box is likely to cope with the engine modifications I have planned, better than the 4 speed.

Manual conversion is another possibility but I assumed that the auto box swap would be easier!!?

Is this at all possible?? Or am I knackered from the get-go??

If wanting to change, manual would be easiest, or why not consider making your present box tiptronic ?
All ferraris etc use automatic gearboxes, with tiptronic.
If you were any good with electronics(?) the diagnostic box for the mondy box has manual shift, so it is capable of doing tiptronic by interupting and modifying the signals for the change points.

The tiptronic box uses a very similar setup to the auto box and is not that much stronger. The problems with changing from a standard to tiptronic is that you will need the box, all associated gear lever, wiring loom and the ECU and keys. Its a big job for very little gains!!

Ok, thanks guys, I've taken from your answers so far that Manual is the easiest option!

Is it a relatively easy swap, or should I just trust the auto box and go for the mods anyway? I'm not planning huge power gains, but would quite like a bit more at the lower end!

when the box breaks fit the manual one

That was just what I was thinking I might do, collect the parts as and when I see them (In between mods ) and then do the work when I can take it off the road for a bit!
