Lattice alloys vs Sharktooth alloys wearing the same R888s. Sharktooth is 1.5kg lighter (15.5kg vs 17kg) and has more clearance inside for bigger calipers. That's my thought for the day. Charlie

Oh yeah, another thing, don't ever try spraying wheels with white Hammerite - it gives you a rubbish finish
. Still at eight wheels for £115 it's not a big deal if the finish is a bit crap.

205/50/15s btw on there at the moment. Just squeeze up next to the coilovers I run with 1mm clearance.

Comp 6 spoke MOs with T1-Rs on came out at 18.5kg - an increase of 1.5kg - explains why it feels worse on bumpy roads

Have to look out for some sharktooths to swap the 888s onto
1.5kg is a useful saving per corner

Good info Charlie -always enjoy reading your racecar blog and handling mods. I thought I'd check my wheels after reading your post and see how badly the 17s hurt the handling/feel. I've got luggage scales rather than bathroom ones but my lattice 15" with 888s on came out at 17kg exactly too

Well I guess it's a 20 % increase in weight between 17" Comps and the lighter 15s.
If you could reduce the weight of your car by 20% ( i.e bring the weight of a 2wd Sapphire down from 1200ish kilos to down under 1000kgs I bet you'd notice some difference

Unsprung weight is important. In the most basic terms a lighter wheel/hub/brake combination can have a big impact on handling. My experienced racing mate puts it simply - times the weightloss by three if you are removing mass from the wheels. So I am taking 6kgs out of the weight of my wheels, and 3.6kg from the brakes (see below), for a total of 9.6kg which is effectively nearly 30kgs handling improvement.
I also have a weight limit of 1188kg for me+car. I weigh 100kg. I would like to get the car as close to that as possible - I was 30kg over last year. So removing nearly 10kg gets me closer to the weight limit.
Brakes:
12. Go to the kitchen. Original Cossie caliper with pads weighs 5.3KG (scale has gone right round past zero)

13. Hi Spec brackets and DS3000 pads weigh 1kg

14. Hi Spec calipers weight 2.5kg

Change of calipers saves 1.8kg per wheel in unsprung weight, gives a bigger braking surface area, should diffuse heat quicker and didn't cost too much.

Very true Charlie - God is in the detail. Lotus pay particular attention to this sort of stuff
