Thumbs up How To Improve MPG on ST170

I am looking at trying to improve the MPG on my ST170 as it appears to be literally drinking fuel. I know fuel prices keep going up but say from £25 I filled up last week I got about 150-160 miles, is that good or bad?

Looking at buying a K&N induction kit and also looking into a FSE power boost valve.

Any other suggestions/recommendations welcome

Change the whole car to a TDCi Sport!

Seriously, a K&N and boost valve wont help your MPG.

Better to get the car on a decent rolling road and have it checked over. It could have a dodgy MAF or Lambda sensor which wont help your MPG

Keep as much as possible stock, and get bluefin. Fuel range of these cars varies alot.

FSE valve...don't even think about putting one of those near your car. I'd recommend a bluefin or dreamscience preferably dreamscience and don't drive with a lead right foot.

The answer is dont drive it!

Theyre known for being rubbish on fuel, my old one would do 220 miles to a tank

mine will do 30-32mpg mixed driving and 40-42 when purely driven on motorways. One thing I have noticed is that driving at 80 uses bucket loads more than at 70.

thats pretty good fuel economy for a st170. Considering the cars aren't really made for daily driving i'd be happy with that.

I did an experiment about a year ago, when driving i tried to not rev it over 3000 rpm. Boring i know and very frustrating but it did return 324 miles on a full tank. A word of warning thou don't drive it far once the fuel light comes on, it burns out the fuel pump and that's a tank off job.

Try it mate and post up what you get on a full tank.

Oh i do have a k & N on mine as well

Change your driving style first and ensure the car is running as it should. A remap can often aid economy but only when accompanied by a sedate driving style.

FSE PowerBoost valve? You'd do better setting fire to some bank notes

Ford say 30 miles, i would say 10 at the very most and then the 10 needs to be sensible no throwing it around corners. The tank does have a swirl pot in side but if it cant pick up fuel for a short amount of time it will knacker the pump

I keep thinking on doing a project MPG, on my fiesta work horse, its a 1.25, get 80miles out of a tenner of fuel, so about 36mpg, which i think is pretty crap, thinking on ripping out most of the interior, and then see what i get

Turbo Pez thats not the way to measure fuel consumption accurately.

you really need to brim the tank, drive it till its near empty and then fill up and see how many miles you done and exactly how much fuel you've used. you cant just stick a tenner in, drive round, then assume all you've used is a tenners worth. going on the fuel gauge aint accurate either due to the shape of the fuel tank.

Nothing to do with TPS. Breather (PCV hosing) issue as said above is exactly what the problem is here.

just accept there shit on fuel, i am on my 2nd st170 the first one i once did the grandad style test, sensible driving not going over 60 and keeping below 3000 ropm and got 387 miles to a tank , then normal driving i was looking at 140 miles to £25 terrible.

my current one i am lucky to get 250 miles in grandad mode, normal driving 220 miles and 170 miles to a full tabk if hammering about.

very unpredictable these cars....... i have even noticed i can do the same trips to and from work every week same mileage etc and same route to work, one week i might get 220 miles the next 190. i cant wait to get shot of mine

Personally I'd change to a aftermarket ecu, 3d mappable of course.
These ST engines with the variable cam can produce awsome mpg figures, indeed as much as 40% reduction has been noticed on cruising throttle settings, some people have experimented with this on certain rollers with the feature turned on and off, mapped for max power on each.
Net result was no power loss with it on, but torque gain with it on, and a massive up to 40% reduction in fuel needed under cruise type conditions, maybe the ford ecu isn't that good to take full advanatage of what's on offer.

That's a ridiculous idea. For the outlay for a aftermarket ECU and mapping you will never recoup the costs in petrol savings in the next 100 years!!!

Depends on your point of view and how many miles you intend to do, in case you haven't noticed fuel is getting more expensive, I can piss 40mpg in the cossie without trying hard, don't forget the std ecu(selling) will recoup some cost, can be done for less than I imagine you are thinking of.
My emerald K3,(which runs the st's variable cam perfectly) got me an extra 150 miles per tank after a £280 COMPLETE mapping session, which is std price for however long it takes, about 4-5 hours without the variable cam, so add a bit, but as done before he'll no doubt have a close map anyway to start, so can even use car and drive to rr, few around wales as well that map these systems.
The "ridiculous" part is ford not exploiting the WHOLE potential of the system.
