Default coolant fans are on? vw diesel

Hi all, anyone clued up on diesel vw transporter vans? When ignition is turned on now, all the coolant fans are coming on. Are they controlled via the ecu using a coolant sensor? Is this how modern diesels work? Thanks in advance..

Says fans are coming on when ignition is turned on so probably not belt driven.

As above, does it have air con? I know on the fords the a/c comes on automatically when the fan position is set to windscreen, thus turning on the fans. Maybe vw are the same?

or possibly pressure switch for air con, if detects a faulty high pressure reading wil bring the fans on to try to cool it down.
