Default cam sensors

ive spent around 4 hours with a mechanic friend of mine trying to find out why my evo 6 engine is only on 2 pots , the engine management light came on and and the engine died doing around 30mph, we think weve tracked it down to the cam sensor around £60.00 it also could be the crank angle sensor, my question is how does the cam sensor work ? as on my fiesta you can pull the cam sensor off and it will still run?

thanks
andy

Most ecu's only look for the phase/cam sensor signal when starting and lock onto it, so unplugging will still run, until you come to start again.
