MK3 Golf VR6?- UPDATED/PICS+ Thanks guys
Early ones had head gasket problems, and they are very strong engines, my friend used to work for VW, he owned one aswell, anyway said it was a very satisfying feeling when he had one come in for it's 200k service!
Should think it was full VW service history though
also they sound awesome with a filter
, but thirsty

Usual stuff.. bodywork, rust etc.. they don't seem to suffer at all as a rule. If you spot *any* rust, I'd look closer, as it could very well be accident damage. The electrics are pretty good as rule too.
Check front fogs are working, not cheap to mess with
Front shocks and sometimes strut tops have a somewhat limited lifespan
Clocking, as there's so few with low miles
Clutch takes a bit of pain
Headgasket, If it's done 90k it's guaranteed to have had at least one
Beware of normal models being passed off as Highlines, the highlines are 96 on and get coilpacks, as an easy way to spot.
ummm brakes and suspension full stop really, especially at the front take a battering,.
They run quite hot, and should sit bang on 90 degrees very quickly, I've seen some sit at indicated 95, but no more than that.
Check the back wiper motor works, and don't be surprised if it won't turn off once activated. They don't.
Full Service History helps. A lot.
Edit : And the ABS is a bit of a pain sometimes. If the light on the dash doesn't go off within about 5 seconds, quietly check round the car and see if there's a sensor connector (located on the strut) has been crushed, that happens a fair bit when somebody's been messing. *might* be the cause.

I had a K plate 3 dr one a few years back and loved it
in fact Im not enitely sure why I sold it
Although not exactly rapid they get upto speed deceptively quick due to the smooth engine which is sooooo torquey
Pete`s right they sound great with a filter and exhaust oh and twin head lights are a MUST

had quite a few of these the ehgine has been covered in the above responses but tailgates on the mark 3 is very prone to the brown stuff around the numberplate light shroud .front door electrics give trouble because of loom from body to door is at its limits when doors opened fully so broken cables are common.slso to mid 93 they are part galvanised after fully galvanised
