escorts van 1.8td down on mpg and power
Hi guys my escort van td is nt very eccominical, i am getting about 25/30 mpg and thats on motorways. its had a fall service, oil/filter/air fliter/fuel filter, glow plugs etc. but does nt seam to be running very well.its down on power and your lucky on the motorway to hit 75 well 70 if the police are looking. any ideas should a tune up help or is there a common fault.
cheers

We use a knackered mk3 fiesta van at work for lugging filthy stuff about (same engine but non-turbo) and a recent oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter change has done it wonders, its now loads more responsive and my mate says fuel economys up on his recent longhaul trip with it. so yes, id say a service would help usually so youre prob looking at something a bit more serious, dead turbo?
Whats the mileage on the td?
It could be the turbo thats gone. The 1.8D i had before my TD engine swap struggled to get up to those speeds and had crap mpg so sounds like the turbo could knackered. Keep an eye on the oil level and exhaust smoke colour for any difference. With a wrecked turbo usually theres plenty of oil loss. Try taking off the plastic intake into the turbo, 2 10mm bolts and try moving the turbo blades side to side to check for bearing play... The less play the better.
Alternativly check the connections on the fuel pump. And theres is a small rubber pipe that goes from the turbo to the fuel pump, which when on boost ups the fuelling for the engine. so check that its ok. It could explain lack of performance

i had a simalar problem with my td, it turned out to be the waste gate sticking open. Over a few days try spraying around the exhaust manifold with wd40. Around where the wastegate is connected to the actuator rod
