it can be done, couple of local back street phone shops do it in peterborough think thay call it (jail break)only trouble you have is you then cant download software updates when you plug it intp i tunes
I recall someone on here doing a warning about upgrading to the latest software version (which I assume would come on all new iPhones dependant on when they left the factory)

Take it to O2 or the Carphone Warehouse. iPhones HAVE to be unlocked for use on all UK networks if requested (since Nov '09 - when O2's monopoly on the iPhone ceased)

The trouble with this tho, is it's only a "soft" unlock/jailbreak. So anytime you update the firmware in iTunes or have to do a restore, you lose the jailbreak, and subsequently, the network unlock too.
I've had my 2G iPhone jailbroken and unlocked for my T-Mobile sim since I got it, and everytime a new firmware comes out, you have to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release the new "hack" for it - which was quick at the beginning, but as Apple got wiser to the Dev Team's work, and newer version of the iPhone came out, it often took longer and longer to do.
I've just got my mates 3G off him, and i've just filled out the unlock form on O2's website, so hopefully I'll get this one officially unlocked from O2/Apple so when I next put it into iTunes, it will register the IMEI is now globally unlocked to use with any network provider. The benefit to that is, that whenever a firmware update comes out, I can just do it and not have to wait for a jailbreak/unlock to come out.
Also, the newer bunch of iPhones (both 3G and 3GS) are having problems with the jailbreak unlocks - they aren't the same as the earlier 3G and 2G's, in as far as the jailbreak and unlock are tethered, so if you have to reboot the phone or the battery dies, when it comes back on, you've lost the jailbreak and unlock! Which is daft!
