Default The s1 or the s2 help me decide

I currently own a s2 turbo, its giving me a little jip but thats another story, anyway its my first escort turbo but im torn between the s1 and s2. I love aspects of both cars and have 2.5-3k to spend on one but which is it to be.........? Please forward your views on each of these cars, pros n cons etc.......... this could get interesting

Cheers Lee

Cheers mate i see your point..... for the money i can spend its the choice of either a average/semi good S1 or a really nice S2
It seems after reading other ppls topics n replies that the S1 carries more respect on the road but the S2 you can modify till your heart is content.

ooooooooooo wot to do??!!!

go for the series one mate - you don't have to get a show car just a solid one with no rust. In my opinion the series one is a better looking car. It would seperate you from the rest !!

Can't believe you're even debating it. Slap another year on your loan and go for the S1.

for 3k id say a really mint S2 if you wait your time.

i wanted a S1 not long ago and thought 5k was a realistic budget. for 3k id think good to average condition. you never know you could land on a good one for that price!

No choice to be made really, S1 = serious drivers car, homologation rally special , wheel arch extensions etc, S2 = turbocharged XR3i !

(Unless the S2 is modded to S1 spec with that superb front end geometry) IMO could never look as good as an S1 though

Lee, my friend. Take a seat...I was in the same dilemma for around the last year. I got my '86 S2 back in 1998 & have spent a fair size of money on it, but wanted a newer one. Looked round for ages & never saw one that was right. Never thought of really owning a S1 because I prefer the interior styling of the S2: more modern & can modify most of it, which i had done, and was going to put my modified bits in to the newer spec'd car. Couldn't find one which said "This is the one", as they all needed bodywork, so started looking at some S1's. (Funnily enough, no-one seems to sell their restored S2's) Saw some of the 'it's mint' S1's which were far from that condition..but was still torn between the original hardcore, nuff respect S1 but modify it & be beaten...or keep an eye out for a tidy bodyworked S2 to put my modified goodies on.

Then spotted a D plate S1 up for sale as the owner wanted the one & only Grey S1..but someone beat him to it & it was taken off the market..only for it to come back on around a month later. Two viewings later, it was mine. Was still considering if I actually wanted a S1 over a S2 up to the point I knocked on his door again to close the deal.
I've had the car for around 2 months now & done 180 miles..and everytime I've been out in it, I've had people saying how good it was, from my mates, to the tyre man yesterday ("Now that's a proper car") down to a local RSOC bloke who waited in his van in the rain for me to come back from the shop to try to get me to join RSOC.

As for the modified parts? All the shiny bits have been fitted to the S1 (same engine bay basically). Performance goodies like turbo timer & boost gauge are being fitted to the S1 as they won't look out of place and do an important function. Interior goodies, mostly being fitted..inc steering wheel change (please don't hit me). Am also going to trial my painted wheels to see how it looks (keeping the originals..obviously). The only thing which isn't going on the S1 is my leather interior which wouldn't look right, and the samco's as they are different shapes.

So Lee...if you can afford it, go for the S1. Performance wise, you can do the same things with both of them. Looks wise, the S1 gets more of it in standard trim.
It's like Matt said, for the money & your head, get a good S2...but for your heart (& a little extra money if you can) get a S1.

Good luck with whatever you choose..if you can decide.

i think i must of done well, paid 3300 for my series 1 and it is good,
i had a inch sized plate put on for MOT a month ago and thats it, it is in really
good condition, full respray 2 years ago. all it needs now is for both rear
arches to be sprayed to tiy them up and then hope fully goin on show
at ford fair.
i bought it with 83k on clock, full leather, every MOT Cert, massive file
of history, samcos, mongoose exhaust, collins chip. well chuffed,
i have spent a bit on her though

hi mate. Just bought a S1 myself. Wanted one since they came out but mortgage, insurance (and women) ! of course, put a stop to it. Fortunately, i'm in a good position to have one now. Let's face it mate, if ya don't get one now, u aint never gonna get one ! Like everyone says, the S2 do look newer but they look so ordinary. A half second glance at a S1 & people know exactly wot u got. I turn heads everywhere i go (and so does the car) ha ha. depends wot u want from the cars, performance can be the same. If u go for the S1, hold out for the rite one. There r some dodgy motors out there so take someone with ya. I have loved every second of owning mine. Good luck mate.

Go for a S1. IMO they are of a better build quality, that is more robust and of better design. S2s are much more plastic and parts much more click together or have been glued together right from the factory.
Don't get me wrong, the difference is only slight, but that's the direction.
