Default Turbo advice urgently required

The car in question is a s2 turbo, a week ago when i was driving as the turbo began to kick in i heard a really loud POP from the engine followed by a gust of black smoke. Now when i drive the car as the revs approach 2-3000 the turbo does not kick in and the exhuast becomes alot louder (almost like a afterburner sound). The dump valve still works fine and drives perfect up until 3000revs. I have no idea about turbos but am wanting to learn about them, can anyone plz advise me what the problem is , a cure and roughly the cost?? Many thanx Lee

sounds like it is running rich and overfueling when coming on boost, to save more expense a trip to a rolling road would be wise or just a garage that is familiar with the ke jetronic system

Check the actuator rod hasn't fallen off the wastegate arm.

It has a stronger spring than standard and will keep the wastegate shut till required to open, turbo could well be ok.

Thanx mate, ive just been reading up on how the turbo works (www.turboregal.com) and what you said about the atuator and wastegate seems to be the problem that i have, hence the wastegate being open the extra boost is pushed through the exhaust system hence the afterburner sound i get (if im correct in saying that)?!! Was the loud pop i heard and the sudden burst of smoke the atuator coming off???

you lot know your s**t dont ya

Many thanx Lee

just a thought - if you check your actuator and it's all ok it might be worth checking your boost pipes, it could be possible that you've split/blown one off

Sounds like youve blown off a boost hose between the turbo and the inlet. When the turbo spin up the air leaks out, but the engine will still get more fuel. If so, you will see black smoke.
