U should try the same question on a bmw forum, I bet they say the M3 is best
Only jesting, but a cossie all the way, although a new M3 would be nice if I had the spare cash ready to throw away.

I had a M3 E36 & my 3dr both at the same time for 2 yrs, the M3 is a far superior car, handling on a M3 is better & you don't have to do anything to the suspension. A proper stage 1 cossie would keep up with a M3 no probs but if i was sitting at 155mph i would rather be in the M3 than my cossie as i know its not going to go bang at that speed.
Saying all that though cossies are by far more fun to drive than M3's
It doesn't matter what cars you have,if youv'e had a cossie you always come back to them again after saying you wouldn't have another because its a wallet breaker
Simon.

depends if you want it to go fast in a straight line or "drive" (handle) nicely.
In standard form E30 M3 all the way IMO.. but cossie will be much more (cheaply) tuneable to make it quicker.

The E36 M3 Evo is a nice fast car, but it has twin vanos which have proven to be very unreliable, nearly every person i know with one has had the vanos fail.Cost of the repair is around the Ł1-1.5K not cheap!!
It has to be the cossie, cheap parts and are reliable with proper set up and servicing.

Was a Yellow 4dr E36 with 4x4 Cossie Running Gear, and also a white E30 M3 looking thing with 4x4 Cossie Running Gear.
Id have a Saff Cossie over a E30 M3 and a E36 M3, but itd be VERY close for me between one and a E36 M3 EVO with all the options as they very nice cars, and arnt old taxi looking mo fos like Saffs, even if tuning wise they not anywhere near as good.

Most VANOS problems are over hyped, in many cases BMW put a good will cliam in the BMW HQ if the car is well lookd after and has full service history.
You can get M3 Evos with full BMW extendable warranty for life, renewable each year. Which covers the VANOS, Engine, gearbox, running gear etc.
On a note to A.Moore's comment, EVERY Cosworth owner has had a 3K+ Rebuild and spends nearly 2K+ each year on keeping the car on the road. If a BMW VANOS went and BMW could do a good will claim yes you would be stumped with the 1.5K bill, however the new VANOS would be warrantied! for a good few years.

I had the same dilema a few years ago.... Saff vs M3 E30
Bought a Saff as I thought that if the M3 went wrong it'd cost me a fortune...... should've bought the M3 in hind sight....lol

You may be right when it comes to cars that are now running 60%+ more power than standard, how would the BMW warranty/reliability/costs stack up if you pushed an M3 that far up ???
Don't get me wrong, I love BMWs, we owned an 850Csi for many years and absolutely loved it, would have another any day if I could afford the running costs...

but my cossie doesn't have a rebuild engine. The engine is still healthy enough to do without a rebuild
here in holland there are to much m3's......and most of the time...pimps
really love to slay them.......they cant stand it then...
dont get me wrong.....m3 are nice beemers....especially the first and the last one..
im still driving around in my 350bhp stage 3 4wd saph...with 230000km...and still going strong....like to see a bmw do it with such bhp per liter and so many km's
so a cos engine is reliable...

cossie every time, you just never know whats hiding under the bonnet, and its hilarious when a 15 year old sierra spanks the arse off a 30k beemer
Lets be fair the M3 is about all round driving ability, the Cos is about straight line speed. Get a sierra saff which creeks groans and moans or reliable comfortable and quiet till you wind it up Beemer. It ain't the fastest in a straight line(although 280 as standard is easy enough to see off a standard Cos), but overall it's a superb car. I hated BMWs image, but once I drove it, game over. Park up a saff next to a M3 and look at the difference, know which one I'd rather go home in

the building quality is not the same as the beemer....chassis wise...
and you talk about 280bhp standard..yeah..its 3liters or more...
but did you know a cossie engine did leave the cosworth factory with 280-300bhp with lots more torque then the m3 will ever have...
but ford brought it back.......
and whats its standard.......a factory tuned the engine and sell it...
a normal 3liter engine has the same bhp as a standard cos engine....
