Default s2 as a daily runner school run etc

hmmn this might be a bit mad of me but wifey and me were chatting last night

shes allways been mad with s2's as when i first met her i had a red one, i change her car every 6 months so shes always asked for one but ive always kinda said no .....dont be silly not practical, drinks fuel etc

so in a moment of madness were considering ditching the bmw 320d and getting her a s2, end of day it wont depreciate which is a big plus and fuck it a change from the normal euro box will be pleasing

it would have to be late spec red very clean and have std suspension wheels etc, atleast then it will drive semi sensible

just wondering of there is any of u lot that use them daily????

If you were to drive it over winter id say it would be ruined after a couple of years.

I use mine 3 or 4 times a week. strictly speaking its a weekend toy but i take it to work a few days a week cos i enjoy driving it.

Since it was setup last april its been 100% reliable. a few services in the middle obviously and a quick check over every saturday and she's golden

My orion is used in all weathers too, its undersealed underneath and waxoyl'd everywhere else, in 3 years i've not had a single bubble of rust pop up unexpectedly. (the sunroof is starting to get abit crusty underneath though )

Go for it, long as you get a good one to start with you will be fine .

Problems start when you leave them sitting about as ive just found out, flat battery on the 3 door again as i dont use it and really its made to be used .

she was pissed right off with me with the last car it was a golf gti turbo she loved that car to bits, even worse is i sold it to my mum so she sees it often

Nice clean s2 kept clean wont loose cash. May be a bit old for everyday use compared to modern cars, but hey summers coming so will be a nice car to have a little fun in.

I found when my old old S1 was parked up it started to deteriorate, used daily and everything seemed to stay in order, didn't get damp build up etc.

Dont forget S2's have no power steering.
It will be a big change from driving Refined B.M.W's, Golfs etc To a old escort.
HTH

P.s as much as i love the sapph, Im glad i got a vw Bora for a daily runner

How about just driving it during summer like I do and getting some cheap banger as a winter runabout?

No matter how much underseal you put on it. The winter absolutely kills the cars. Only drive it in summer though and it will last for decades.

my cosworths and rs turbos over the years sat outside when i had them and visited the bodyshop a few times a year, the weather does affect these cars big time never mind the salt underneath.

i would say helll no.

go and get it bought fella. Modern day cars are so boring. I used my saff last year though the winter and it rusted like fook. Its had all the body work done now and its asleep in my dads garage for over winter. I miss driving it though. Respect to all you lot who have been driving your S1's and S2's.

fook me yer forgot about power steering

you say about drive not being as good, the golf we had was a superb drive very nice, the beemer though, with its 18's and 225 tyres tramlines a bit on certain roads, had it all tracked up too

You sure she'll be able to cope with the non power steering. And shit brakes ???
Its a real downgrade from a modern day beemer.

I wouldnt bother with an escort turbo as a daily driver, because as standard they are shite. high maintenance, You cant leave it anywhere or it'll get dinked, scraped, knocked nicked. They're getting on a bit now and the chances of finding a good one that doesnt need a rebuild, or some restoration without spending a lot of money.
Unless it was a weekend toy then I think it'd be allright.

They are much better used daily than occasionally, lets face it they came with a 3 year 60k warranty when new so they are as good as any other car if you find one in the appropriate conditon

Having said all that, fuck using one for the school run, no way would I want my kids to be in it if an accident were to happen, they dont compare to a modern car in terms of occupants safety.

just seen this advert on another site i use

My neighbour wants to sell his 1987 RS Turbo,he is the second owner had it since 1990.
Red totally standard 69,000 miles has never been welded, sprayed or damaged.Has just passed the MOT as it always does, will be taxed for 6 mts. (has always been a second car)
He doesn't use it and is fed up paying Ł40 a month to garage it (has been garaged all its life)
He wants Ł2000 (Cheap I think for such an original car)
He is away in Mexico at the moment I will put his No up when he is back in a few days.
Don't contact me this is all I now about it! Just giving eveyone the heads up if interested
Steve

Ok he is back from Mexico I don't have his no. but his dad is called John he is a bit deaf and will talk for England!

got to strong for no power steering imo, i know its different but my dads old landy was shite, about 15 turns lock to lock with no power steering, shite brakes etc, hes glad to have a modern car as a family car now, and the added safety.

id still say go for it though, as you say after a few months the novelty may wear off, no harm done.

just put plently of polish/wax and waxoil on it

rose tinted specs are great from mtime to time but take them off, give yourself a shake down and get a nice reliable car
