Default Finally the Escos is fixed!!- Warning- Don't use Burton Power oil pumps!!

Well, after months of problems with the Escort Cossies oil pressure following a brand new engine build, it seems that the brand new Burton Power oil pump was the culprit ...Being a small turbo, the oil pump has no spray bar, and is a very basic design that is identical to a pinto one.

Got the oil pump replaced yesterday with a new one from another company, and immediatly it fixed the crap oil pressure on start up, and non-existant pressure when the car warmed up. It seems that the machining on the releif valve is very very poor, and allowed the valve to stick open, causing oil pressure to drop off as soon as the car warmed up ..

To say I am not happy is an understatement, I will be getting the pump inspected by an independant 3rd party, and will be approaching Burton for the cost of a new pump and the labour to replace it ...

But in the meantime, at least I now have an Escort Cosworth that I can use again , made me very happy today when it fired up and ran perfectly ..

What was wrong with the original pump? Hope the low oil pressure hasn't damaged the engine . I'd be looking for some compensation from Burton.

Shells and bores were inspected, they are perfect. The oil pressure was fine as long as the engine had some revs on, just from cold took 6-7 secs to build pressure, and at idle the pressure would drop off.. The engine was harldy used due to the issue, so it has not suffered at all thank god, as it is a fresh build and still running in, just glad I have got it sorted.

Still think it's very bad form to sell a crap oil pump though, they must have tested them?

The original pump had done 110,000 miles, and was pretty much perfect and would have gone again happily, but due to it being a total rebuild for big power, it made sense to stick a brand new high flow 5 bar pump in with the build.

Its shocking to think that such a relatively cheap part can cause so much aggro.

Great news

So when will you be taking the car down to MSD to complete the new small turbo tuning package? Can't wait...

Thinking about it - I seem to remember a thread a while back about other people having major problems with YB oil pumps from Burtons...

Does that mean you know longer want a Porsche 996 Turbo Wil? Glad you've sorted it tho!

I doubt Burtons will pay anything though, you may get a replacement pump out of them but I think that'll be pushing it.

You still dropping down to mine for tea next week mate?

Still fancy a porsche, but will see how the Escort goes for a bit! Will have to be week after next for a drink as I'm on nights next week.

Hopefully go to MSD soon, got some niggles to correct but are only details! Got to go to adrenaline to fit my frame connectors, and pro-alloy for an intercooler which will cover most of the running in miles as well!

Starting from cold it took 5-7 secs to build enough pressure to turn the oil light out, then it hit over 5 bar as it should do. You could watch the pressure drop as the engine warmed up, and eventually at idle the pressure would drop off the end of the in car gauge scale, and the followers would rattle.

As soon as you revved it, the pressure shot up, but you had to hold revs for the followers to quiet down. With the new pump, pressure is instant from cold, and it does not drop below about 1.5-2 bar at hot idle. Engine is sweet as a nut with no noise at all now.
