We know what it's meant for but not what they use it for.

Its meant to contribute mainly towards the running of the roads, which it does to an extent, they also use funds for elsewhere though.

Like any tax though, it goes into a central point (the government) and then its up to them what they spend it on.

Its been bugging me for a while now, in my mind road tax is paid so the roads can be maintained but newer cars pay no road tax to they must float

I give it a few more years or until another party comes in power before all cars have to pay tax again. Also all this lost revenue on car not paying tax is being put on fuel a barrel of fuel now is 40% cheaper than last year so why is it going up :S

My thoughts anyway

Hybrids and economical cars pay less or not tax as a government incentive to encourage people to be greener, in order that we as a country can meet our CO2 obligations.

Upkeep of the roads.... yeah okay.

In Mirfield, Church Lane (a road that is full of Ł500k houses) is the worst mess... and Nettleton Road I try to avoid like the plague cos one day my little fez is gonna disappear down one of those potholes!

It's not called Road Fund Licence any more, just to stop people thinking the cash isn't going where it is meant to.

It's now Vehicle Excise Duty.

Very little, if any, Government income and expenditure is ring-fenced. They collect money under a variety of taxes and charges, then distribute this general fund across the various departments.

Is it a private road though? If so i'm pretty sure the residents will be responsible for the upkeep of the road. I could be wrong but that's what i've been told.

I've had to tax my Focus today at Ł118.25 for 6 months, its rediculous, the roads around here are covered in potholes, the only thing they seem to spend money on is putting in more and speed bumps

it was orignally based on how big your vehicles was and how much wear and tear it was going ot put on the road

then, someone clever, decided that they could tax the emissions that might be produced by the vhicle, so that's when the tax bands came in

apparently the road tax and general motorist charges come in at around the 340 billion mark every year, enough to pay for plenty of policeman, nurses, firemen, schools, hospitals etc, but not quite enough left over to pay for the roads they aer actually supposed to be paying for

so go figure eh

it wont get spent on the huge hole on the road outside the local post office

It makes me laugh that the money i have spent on tax over the year could have been spent on a duck island or mote cleaning and not on the shitty roads lol
