thats a good motherboard or a lucky chip with no fsb wall.
That 8x mulitplier sucks usually.

I used to have an e8400 on a 650i,
I see that you're running close to max vcore. 1.35v.
If you dont hit the wakll you could hit 4ghz, but the core2 doesnt see any benefits once you're over 3.6ghz.

Still impressive overclock fella.

overclocking is just changing the computer settings to gain clock speed etc for better performance, can be done on most comps but not every comp, obviously you need to know what your doing and need the right cooling etc for the system otherwise it could end up melting

these chips love to be overclocked theres a few about at 4.2ghz atm running the same voltage as i am so have to see how it goes but still got plenty of voltage left in her yet , disagree about the benefits i run the bencmarks everytime i make a change and from 3.6 to 3.76ghz still seeing quite large gains

Yer I had the early revision co wolfdale.
Yer definetely u got some potential still.

With my benchmarks and findings, memory bandwidth read and write always increased, all the way to 4.4ghz
Gaming the gains dropped off once i hit 3.8, and had little impact after that, but It was dual core, with an ancient xfx 65oi and a 4870.

Only thing to watch out for is degradation with continual high voltage.

get it to 4ghz upload some pics mate.

Our lass bought a new laptop yesterday with Windows 7 on it, its obvious how much cleaner and tidier it is, can hide stuf away at the bottom so it doesn't get cluttered. Seems to work much faster as well.

And thats coming from someone who doesn't really know their arse from their elbow about computers and the workings of them!

will make the final tweeks later on i hope just got some stuff to do before then so dont want to risk it just yet

temps still seem very good, all four cores idling at around 42 and under load around 58

You can d/l utilities that help, or go through the BIOS. Without wishing to appear rude, if you are not sure where to find it, I would suggest you should not be doing it (unless it's a machine that you do not mind if it goes tits up).

I did have my 8400 up to 3.4 on standard cooling, but wound it back as I no longer play games on the PC. I only have a midi case as well, so no go for after market coolers.

I have a Q6600, is it the G0 stepping one thats good for overclocking.?

Im looking at building a new PC in the new year running an I7 extreme with 2 Ati HD5970 or similar cards, solid state discs etc etc... Will be looking at dabbling a little with the OC on that.

My mate is right into the OC.. He tells me tales of people cooling the CPU with liquid nitrogen to push them up to silly speeds..

no, im guessing you have standard cooling? only things with these chips they can be clocked but they run pretty hot so on standard you could only probly go to around 3-3.2ghz and that depends on what ram you have in there

the G0 stepping version uses less power as standard....
so overclocking is more reliable...

yes i realisese its not an option you click or a switch you press, im just asking how you go about doing it. Not done it before and as a network engineer for the nhs we generally dont overclock our server's

I am going to go look on google now. If i mess up a machine its no big deal

long as your not daft you wont mess it up, get cpu-z etc and keep an eye on the temps make sure your not going above 70o under load and the worst you will get is the comp crashing then you just keep changing it in bios do abit of reading on it it first

Cool mate cheers Have got CPU-z anyway. Found the 1st stumbling block. Dell lock their motherboards and you cant change any settings to do with clock speed within the bios apprently there is a way round it by bridging a couple of jumpers but there must be an easier way. Going to invesitgate it now. If i dont reappear on here for a while its because im building a new machine
