Default Mondeo 4x4 new engine fitted at Devil developments

Well i was away with work for nearly six months of last year so saved up a load of cash for one reason to up the power on the 4x4.
I was thinking throttle bodies but decided against it. I phoned Lee at Devil developments in west sussex and had a chat with him and came up with a plan as well as chatting with a few members on another site i visit. I wanted what ever was done to look as if it was supposed to be there and as if ford had done it. Sort of standard modified if that makes sense.I dropped the car off to Lee on the 10th of october and picked it up this morning and to say i am pleased is an understatement
The old engine was removed

Then a car was sourced that had the engine i wanted.

To keep the temps down an uprated charge cooler rad was fitted and it is massive but it fills the gap in the bumper nicely and does not look over the top and still looks discret. Also 2 uprated fans were fitted to the main rad, you can just see them in the pic below.

Lee also took a few pictures for his website and he even washed it for me so it looked nice when i went to collect it.

I am really pleased with how it has turned out the 4 hour drive home was fantastic the car pulls like a train sounds sweet and i didn't have the radio on once on the way home as i could listen to the sound it makes all day long. it has the standard recirculating dump vale on i was going to get another one but it sounds so nice as it is i am not going to bother.
It wasn't a direct fit the charge cooler needed to be modified to fit it needed a mk2 mondeo engine mount also and the throttle body elbow had to be extended by 3 inches as the charge cooler was in a different position. It had a new cam belt kit fitted a ap racing organic clutch a mongoose de cat pipe and a massive K and N cone filter, it came with the blue rouse motor sport boost hoses also had the air tec uprated charge cooler rad. Now the original plan was to use the focus rs ecu but it is so deep wired into the car it would have needed the whole floor loom and clocks so Lee opted for KMS ecu which also came with wide band lambda and an in car digital display which gives the air fuel ratio boost pressure and air inlet temp. it is running 1 bar of boost.
So there you have it a mk1 rs focus powered 4x4. A first i think. I am like a dog with 2 dicks at the moment i can't keep the smile off my face.

I was looking at putting the 4WD drivetrain into my Mondy Saloon, and i looked it up and it turns out the Transfer box and Rear Diff would be eaten alive, and the FRS engine is only a little down on Power and Torque compared to when my engine was N/A, so i can only imagine your engine being too powerful for the drivetrain too.

I know alot of people say this i know the escort rs2k 4x4 transfer box was not that good but i have not seen alot of proof that the mondeo one is as bad, alot seems to be hear say, The mondeo transfer box is a slightly different design than the escorts and is supposed to be stronger so thought i would give it a go, there is a zetec turbo 4x4 on a mondeo site i go on and that is more powerful than this and that one has been fine.

the mondeo and rs2000 transfere box's arent as weak as people think.
most fail due to over heating which is usualy caused by low oil in the t-box.

my rs2k 4x4 took so much abuse and never went wrong, it was driven extremly hard all the time.
aslong as the oil level is kept where it should be and not run low it will hold up.
for the rs2k t-box that means 300ml

i know the mondeo version is different, mainly the power spilt.
the mondeo power split is 60/40 in favour of fronts as opposed to the rs2k 4x4 60/40 split in favour of the rear wheels.

as long as you make sure the wheels are turning before you plant it and dont launch the car hard from standstill or do burn outs it will be fine.

No offence mate, but your obviously going to have less chance of failure when using an engine that is pushing out just 150hp if i remember rightly.

Abit different to 212hp.

jason hodd was running 350bhp in his rs2k 4x4 turbo a few years ago and the t-box held up fine until he sold it on and the new owner was doing burn outs from standstill whilst red lining it,

thats proof enough for me that the t-box can handle more than my mesely 150bhp

That is awesome!!!

I would bloody love that!

Interested to see how it all holds up too, that must surprise a few people, and with 4x4 probably handles pretty well too

Yeah it handles like a dream as well as being 4wd it is fully poly bushed and lowered 35mm (bilstein shock and spax springs) and has front and rear strut braces and an uprated 21mm rear anti roll bar from the states, adjustable rose jointed tubluar rear arms and adjustable rose jointed front and rear drop links.

one of the cool things about this car is how quick it has transformed from being tatty to totally mint, resprayed, all the suspension/body upgrades, custom interior and now this!

of course if it had cossy running gear it would be rock solid, despite the fact i have seen no end of cossies (or cars with cossy running gear) over the years at track and drag events breaking props, gearboxes, diffs etc

wot we really want is someone to see if evo running gear can be transplanted into these types of cars! now theres some running gear that can take abuse and you get to keep the transverse engine rather than having to go longitudinal

the mk1 mondeo is approx the same weight as the mk1 focus (which is what you are doing your turbo 4x4 project on isnt it?) and when parked next to a focus they arent that much longer (the focus is wider and higher than the mondy though)

good to see constructive comments there.
