it will be on a mk1 golf so it will fit the look
ill mull it over but i wanted ideas on a decent tyre size if i were to do it so i did it as safe as possible as opposed to completely on the edge of safety

Don't do it mate, especially if your gonna have a young'un in the car with you.
It all depends on what kind of stretch you go for, but to be honest, you should stick with what size is meant to fit your wheel. Even with a small stretch (205 width instead of 215 for example), the contact patch will still be smaller resulting in the grip not being upto it's full potential.
If you start going for a big stretch, then you will start putting yourself in danger. The grip will be really bad and the wear will be excessive, and in a worse case scenario, the tyre could always blow out or slip of it's bead when driving.
Donnntttt dooooo ittttttt.

I'm happy to be proved wrong, but there are a lot of people saying it's dangerous without, it would appear, any proof.
years ago and i do mean years i used to see quite a few x pack escorts and capris with the 7 or 7.5 inch wide rs hoops with 175 50 13 pirrelli p7's the tyre wasn't wide enough looking at the size but on the car the tyre covered the wheel fine.
i used to run 205 60 13 on 6 inch rs alloys on my mk2 rs2000 and they were ok but didn't look as cool as them p7's.
i also used to run capri special 7x13's with 185 60 13 pirreli p6's on a few mk2 xr2's and they worked fine and looked cool as,don't see anyone running them wheels on feestas now but i did in 93
