Default MAF - Wearing part or not?

How would you describe one?
Do some last forever, and others go quite regualar for no good reason; or good reason?
These M5 maf's got me wondering, don't hear them mentioned on other cars, yet these last say 30-60k miles.
What got me wondering was someone suggesting to use a second hand one on another car, not something I would do, but as a 'non wearing part' is fine...?

MAF failure is quite common on a lot of modern cars.

the maf often gets overlooked because it dosn't normally give a fault code when its not working properly, a lot of vags that have covered around 80k often seem to run a lot better with a new maf, very common on some impreza's aswell.
