Default 02 plate diesel focus fault

My 02 plate diesel focus has started giving me problems sometimes just after starting, sometimes whilst driving along, the glow plug light starts to flash, and the engine note changes / sounds like its not running on all four and usually ends up cutting out. 9 times out of 10 it will restart straight away other times can take 5 or 6 tries then fires. Any ideas what it could be????

I'm sure on that age they use the light in conjunction with fault reporting, so get codes read.
