Default Removing ashtray from Escort

So have a 99 escort....Don't smoke so want to remove the ashtray and clean it properly so it doesnt stink the car out....except I cant figure out how to get the stupid thing to come out, fiddled around but cant find what holds it in , haynes as usual is no sodding help

so...ummm...help?

Clean it without removing it? If the car stinks of smoke it's probably mostly from the upholstery anyway.

Easier to get it properly clean if its out of the car (yes im proud of my car) got the upholstery clean, its just the ashtray reeks still whenever anyone opens the thing to use the power socket

i'm pretty sure you pull it out then tilt it up when your come to the stop and sort of hinge it out if you know what i mean

they are meant to be stiff just wiggle it and pull harder ,(sounds like a porn film )

iirc they are stiff, think you push the chrome flap down and slide it out and up. They do come out, someone may have just jammed it in.

sounds all sexual!!

Mine Pops out real easy, I just wiggle it a little, and walla, its out..

Sometimes have the problem Wacking it back in, but it normaly takes a while

got it out with a LOT of wiggling, seems white goo at the back was holding it....looks like bloody mastic or silicone sealant....I'm beginning to wonder if this car will turn out to be a lemon....
