Newbie st24 owner (hopefully) :)
Hello all. Been a while since ive owned a Ford (been living under Vauxhall ownership for a few years :O ) and ive decided to get that st24 ive always wanted. Going to look at one tomorow and was just wondering if any of you nice folks would give me a bit of advice as to what to look for? Im fairly mechanically savvy so i know to look for the usual, head gasket etc but i dont know anything about st24's. Anyone shed some light on what to look for? Be much appreciated.
. If all goes well and i buy it i will get some pics up tomorow. Thanks

metal water pump as plastic one brakes, after 3500 ish rpm the secondery valves should open so u get a bit more power. blowers work on all not just on 1 and 2, airbag light, and then the normal stuff really
but there a timing chain and check is not making to much rattle
other then that there a good motor, have one sitting in my nack garden needing an alternater then up for sale lol but i loved it
even thought about making it YB rwd

Problems I have had door solenoids packup so check all doors open + close on remote/drivers door. Also, just had broken front suspension spring so check all the springs if standard. As said give it good rev over 3500K to check irmc working should get noticeable surge and secondary valves opening.
If it early ST24 then probably got black water impellor water pump dodgy, but my late ST24 1999/2000 had cream impellor better, but to change it cheap about £40 for metal.
Apart from that great cars, hope yours is a goodun.

rust on rear arches, spare wheel well and sills to look at
water pump as mentioned and secondaries working, clutches, headgasket
also listen for ticking noises as could be a cracked manifold or the head is leaking from head gasket
later models are galvanised so no rust issues, make sure everything works aswell, escpecially the seat motor as they have plastic cogs that strip, wear on bolsters is comming and stichting comes undone
ive had mine now for a year and its never let me down with 160k on the clock, alls ive done is servicedit and new brakes all round, and st200 interior as its so much better but not cheap
as someone mentioned before im really tempted to cossie mine as its such a good shell but ill wait until my escort is finished as at the minute its the most reliable car ive owned lol

Hello and welcome. They are a good motor.I put a water pump on my mates V6 mondeo.Easy to do.I also fitted a coil pack and leads to one.People said that the inlet manofold had to come off. to get at the plugs, well you dont have to take it off at all.

Thanks so much for all the replys. Lots there to look at, especially the bit about the secondary's and associated power surge, didnt know about that at all.
Going to meet the guy in a few hours so fingers crossed. WIll let you know how i get on.
Gutted
the guy rung me as i was en-route to meet him telling me his water pump had given up so no more car
. Im well gutted, was looking forward to it. OH well. He says he's gona repair it and get back in touch but tbh im not sure i want to no, no telling what damage was done when the pump went to the heads etc.
Shame, but plenty more fish in sea. Agree with most peeps comments on faults, some are normal wear and tear etc. Another to point out is as someone mentioned check rear wheel well cos mine was an errr well, full of water which runs between rear lights into boot etc causing rust, easy fix with sealer, but as these old cars now, worth checking.
Good luck in your hunt.
