My mate reckons ford produced two different versions of the escort cossy, one with the whale tail and one with a small spoiler.

I thought people had just removed the whale tail when i'd seen one without

 

It was an option at one time to buy one without the whale tail.

 

Was an optional extra i think.

this is true, in the later years the tail was an option, so came standard without one and so was therefore in fact a little faster .

 

the small turbo one was available with the deleted rear wing otion

 

Ive got a ford brochure somehwere with a white one on the front of it with no whale tail.

 

Delete aero pack option. Also had no front splitter/spoiler/hockey sticks.

They look crap without them though imo.

There part of the escort cosworths 'look' and should stay well put in my opinion. Its like taking the bonnet vent off a scooby!

 

but the big turbo with the wing was good for 144 mph
and the small turbo witout the wing was equally good for 144 mph top end

with the wings they could "only" do 140

apparently

i ran my silver one for a while with no whale tail, the old Power Engineering car was a silver one with no whale tail

 

Wasn't that something to do with small children potentially getting tangled up in it in an accident? Health and saftey gone mad that, and people say the UK is bad!

I think if they did have it on, they had to have some other strange thing attached to it to make it legal.

 

thats about right, it had to have somthing like a rear window 'washboard' across the top of it, there was a pic of a blue one on here a few years back.

 

Wen i was getting the boot painted on my old escort i drove about for a week and the car felt noticable quicker especially over 100 without the spoiler? might have been me just thinking it but it did FEEL quicker lol

Was it just the Swedish or am i right in thinking all the escorts that was sold around Europe (excluding the uk and ireland) didn't have the whale tail spoiler?

depends if your mate has seen the proper german ones with the rare wolf spoiler,without a top spoiler the car doesn't handle as good so Ford-Wolf got together and did a special spoiler that adds extra downforce.
i'm lucky my car has a Genuine one fitted to it

I thought Sweden did it becasue of the injury it could cause to Motor bike riders in an accident

my Esc Cos came from factory Without the spoiler and IMO looks so much better. People have asked if mine is a replica tho

 

There was also this type to but did ford sell them like this.I dont think they did.

the whale tail was allowed in sweden, it was switzerland that didn't allow them.

those guys are paranoid about cars....

 

Apparantly you could buy whaletail that broke up into sections, if a biker hit it, to suit the funny swiss rules though? I remember somone on here talking about it! I wasn't a ford item though, maybe Wolf?
