Default motorway traffic officers

... what are they actually allowed to do, not talking about traffic police but the ones in the jeeps that are marked as "traffic officer" can they pull you over or are they just there to assist with accidents etc?

Highways Agency Traffic Officers content

Who are we?

The Highways Agency Traffic Officer Service staff are trained to a high standard in everything from safety to dealing with customers, traffic management and the use of technology.

Where incidents occur, our police colleagues still retain their role in investigating crime, but we are there to help with coordinating the resources of the other emergency services, managing the traffic and re-opening routes as soon as it is safe to do so.

We also keep the public informed through our electronic message signs and by supplying information for local travel reports.

We are there to help you if you breakdown or are involved in a collision or incident.

We also remove damaged and abandoned vehicles and clear debris from the carriageways.

We patrol the motorways in vehicles marked as traffic officers with high visibility markings.

We provide mobile and temporary road closures and of course we also support the police in their duties.

This section contains full details about what we do. Please use the links on the right to navigate through the pages. Information on how to become a part of the Traffic Officer Service is available in the Careers section of this site, where you can register for location-specific Traffic Officer Service email alerts as new vacancies become available.

Essentially, no they can't tell you off for speeding past them That is really what you want to know isn't it! Although this throws a spanner in the works:

Under the Traffic Management Act 2004, we have the power to stop and direct traffic, close lanes and carriageways and manage traffic and it is an offence not to comply with our directions. This means if you fail to follow directions given by a traffic officer or as indicated by our signs you could face a fine of up to Ł1000 as well as possible driving licence endorsement or even disqualification.
I don't think they have any devices that measure speed though!

they are named wombles in the road industry

we have them stationed in our yard.
always 2 up (1 good at letters,1 good at numbers)
they have no power whatsoever.

as for the stop and direct traffic, close lanes etc. bollocks!

they are controlled by ncc,nrc
basically control centres who have people with the power to command closures etc.

had many a run in with them over unsafe practices etc

TOSSERS

don't you just no thats true

can't complain though we have all thought the same at one piont, they can't do anything really i have been past them at motorway speeds a few times (on a motorway that is) and also when i lost it on an island and was stuck down a ditch they never did anything except drive past ok i was being a bit naughty but by this piont i had learned my lesson so a tow would of been nice, so i have no respect for them at all anymore and treat them like any other person, only my view though.
