My 1989 ERST...NOW SOLD!
OK, here we go well some of you may know that my car has been off the road for the past few months since the end of the summer show season. I decided I wanted to "tidy up" the underside on the car. Now I am no bufty, I wish my car was like some of the mint s2's on here
But, I just wanted it to be a bit cleaner and add some colour to the underneath! So, in true d.i.y fashion
all done by myself (and far from finished!!!
) I have slowly been taking the car apart (to a point where I feel comfortable) and learning a lot whilst I go along I have some pictures to share with you lot.....
I will just say, yes I know it aint nothing compared to some other undersides, and I should have power coated this and properly painted that, as I say I aint entering it for concourse, just a tidy up, so enjoy what I have done so far, constructive comments welcome!
I'll try and keep this page updated as and when, to be honest I dont think it is going to be complete for next summer
(I work very slowly) and it is a case of funding things too
When it is eventually finished I plan to start my engine build
Anyway, enough talk..... I have made the pics a decent size so should be fairly 56k friendly.....enjoy.
P.S - Anyone who want's to see what the car did / does look like then click the below link

This is pretty much where I am up to now. Nothing more will be done now till the new year. (Apart from another coat underneath) Next thing on the shopping list is a cossie rear disk setup from the Zoo
And then with a few more hours getting a few niggly bits sorted then I can start putting the rear suspension back together and get all the rear done. I then plan to pull the car out and spin it round and dissemble the front end including dropping the engine and box etc (will be calling for mates help I think
) and the front end will be cleaned, painted and polybushed at the same time I will clean the bay up a bit, although it is pretty sound already
Will try to keep things updated as often as possible but I work slow so they wont be coming fast
That lot is about 2 months worth of 2 or 3 nights a week for a couple hours
Cheers

Looks good mate, I've also started with the underside of my mk3 cabby, it's really a nightmare to do! And I'm gonna spray it I guess
But yours looks great, in a few months I hope my underside looks orange

To get the crap off, best thing I found to use was petrol. Yes, it comes straight off, it is very messy though and you end up stinking! Just don't do what I did if your laying under the car with a rag full o petrol and let it drip down into your eye
But yours looks great, in a few months I hope my underside looks orange
Good luck with yours mate! And thanks everyone for the comments so far, it means a lot
Any news
I know I said no update till the new year but christ...
No mate, I have not been home since Xmas eve, so haven't even touched the car....
But, cheers for the bump
What undercoat are you putting on to kill the rust?
Looks smart though mate think i better have a go at mine
Looks smart though mate think i better have a go at mine
So I knew no welding or major rust had to be dealt with, to be honest the surface stuff I have just rubbed down with a wire brush, coated with stonechip underseal painted and then waxoyl'd on any bits which were needed (couple of bits on the arches and behind back bumper.)
Adam you can come over and do mine to if you want.
It is a shitty job, but now I am starting to get to a point where it is paying off I think
Been watching ur thread too
Cheers
Its hell mate. 1/2 me wants it running 2 morrow and the other 1/2 wants me to give her a hell of a tidy up.
Won't be till probably next august gone either
***Mini Update***
Been busy this morning painting more, had the shit job of painting all the niggly bits around the fuel tank and rear chassis areas. Coated it as best I could before I ran outta paint. Going to pick some more up tomorow ready for the front end as I don't think there is much more I need to paint now at the back end.
Quick snap....

Next thing on the list (end of the month) is the rear disc kit. Once I have that on I can start putting it back together

***MINI UPDATE AGAIN***
Haven't done much tonight. I feel like shite to tell you the truth, was ill all xmas and not have a bad cold so the last thing I want to be doing is going out under the rs in the cold garage
ah well
Removed the petrol tank strap tonight. Didn't remove it initially when I painted the tank, don't know why
If you look on the tank pic at the top of my thread you will see what it did look like! But, Dave (Vrooom Ptttshh) pointed out i should have painted it, well now I have
P.S - The pics are shit, but pretty hard to take pics of a long straight thing
Removed, looks shit

Rubbed The Surface Shite Down

Painted Up

Quick One Of How The Car Sits

Need to wait for the tank strap to dry and then I will give it another going over and then re fit

nice make sure tht car cover dont scratch the paint tho
Here is how I was going to leave the tank......

Here is that petrol tank bar I showed you previously, now fitted
Loads better dont you think?!

Also, a couple of bits I picked up today, new shackles as my old ones, I was intending to use, except the rubber bits in the middle I kinda fooked removing them originally, well they were worn, but I though't maybe I could by them seperate, but had to buy the whole shackles again, just glad I got em I guess
Also, got some new bolts needed, tried to get the long blue bolts that go through the hubs / rear arms, they are no longer a service item apparently, not a prob using the originals, just needed new nuts

Next job is removing the rear ARB. I have loosened it off but, Dave and his trusty haynes
has informed me that I cannot remove it without dropping the petrol tank
Didn't really wanna drop the tank at all, I wanna get it off the car without dropping the tank, anyone know if it can be done?
I may leave it on the car, I did want to give it a quick lick of paint tho
only thing is I guess I need to remove it to fit my polybushes as im sure you get rear arb bushes in the deflex kits? (Twins?)
Anyway, will keep you posted.

Adam. My philosophy is this. "if a jobs worth doing at all, then do it right.". Mate dropping the tank it a piss job. Get it dropped, remove it, and then you can empty all the crap out of it while ya there. You can also remove the filler neck then too and paint behind properly.
here :

Your doing a good job, and by the looks spending quite a bit of money on new bits, so why not just go that little farer???? At the end of the day its only time not money

Lee,
You are quite right, and I agree with ya, im just not that mechanically minded myself, im quite amazed at doing what I have so far on me own actually
I have had problems with petrol leaks on rs's from the word go, I guess scared to drop the tank and refit incase it starts leaking, oh joy!
But I reckon your right, anyway, gunna have a crack at it tomorrow so guess i'll see what happens, Dave reckons the only hard bit is getting the filler neck back in the tank properly? Never done it so don't know what to expect
Spot on, well if I was loaded then i'd pay someone else to do it, of course and have it done for summer, with that in mind there is no rush really, next year would be nice
Cheers for the input

Thing is mate, you might not be mechanically minded, but its your car so you can learn on it. And if ya get stuck, helps only a keyboard away
Youll be suprised how easy it comes down mate. Undo filler next etc, unclip hand brake cable off it, remove fuel pump and unclip fuel line, then remove the cradle bar that you have painted, then i think from memory theres two more bolts. Dont forget to support it with a trolley jacck and lower it!!! There will prob be loads of shite in there thats better out than in
