What car is it for?

 

It's for, I assume a BMW, simply buy a HAYNES workshop manual, will tell you how to do lots of things, including tear downs etc, just make sure you use a quality part when you do it.
I would say most people start tinkering with a haynes manual to hand first and progress from there, but a thermostat change is a very simple procedure.
