http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Superb little programme, ive used it for years, one thing to take note of though, if you just install it and run it, it will delete alot of shit but one of those things is cookies which will mean it will clear ALL your saved passwords/usernames for websites, so make sure you either remember them all OR, go into the settings and UNTICK cookies and then it wont touch any of that.

But anyway, run that and tell us how much space it frees up

Other thing to do, go into control panel then "add remove programmes", from here just uninstall anything you do use/need.

Lastly assuming your using win xp, click start bar, then "run" and type in "msconfig" and then click on startup tab, and these things are programmes which load up automatically with windows when you switch the pc on, so have a look and untick anything you dont need as soon as the pc starts up, for example itunes etc. Some are obvious i.e msn, yahoo, but if theres something which you have no idea just google it and it will tell you.

Do all of that and you should find its abit better, if its still slow might want to look into your antivirus and checking you dont have any nasties in there.

1stly you want to do a virus scan with avg anti-virus,they are the best,no matter what anyone says,
2nd.you want to do a spyware/malware check.use avg anti spyware for this.
3rd.you want to run a adware scan.use adaware for this.

the above programs are free and tried and tested as i have done this over 20 times to pcs and laptops running vista and xp.

4th go to start, control panel, system, advanced, performance, and click on adjust for best performance.
this will make your taskbars etc go back to old school taskbars, but you can change them back without losing responsiveness.

5th then go to start control panel,add/remove programs, get rid of whatever you dont use.

6th go start, run, msconfig hit enter, then startup, untic anything which says software in the key which will be all of it,then apply.it will say restart computer but deny.

*there are also services that slow down your pc and enable access for hackers etc.on the majority of pcs i can get into it from the password screen in 5 secs even if i dont no ur password.no joke
i will instruct u by pm if you want to do any of these, its very beneficial for you but dont want anyone just clicking here and there and messing shit up and blaming me.

7th you want to go start, run, regedit, double click HKEY CURRENT USER,then CONTROL PANEL,then DESKTOP,the find menushowdelay and change the value from 400 to 0,then ok/apply.

after this, restart your computer,u may notice its slower loading up wen it comes back on,this is just the pc getting used to the new configuration.when the desktop loads up again it will have a box saying youve messed with a windows utility etc.just tick the box and ok it.then restart your computer again.
once it has started up again you will see a massive decrease in the amount of time your pc takes to do things.

THIS DOES WORK I HAVE DONE IT TO OVER 20 PCS AND LAPTOPS,ONE WAS A BRAND NEW £700 HD ACER ASPIRE 6930G LAPTOP FROM PC WORLD AND IT WAS FUCKED,RUNNING 1 PROCESSOR WHEN IT WAS DUAL CORE,AND 1 GIG OF RAM WHEN IT HAD 3 GIG.ONCE I SORTED THIS,AND DID THE ABOVE IT FLEW AND USED FAR LESS THAN VISTA WAS MENT TO USE ON IDLE.

any queries dont hesitate to ask.

hope this helps

How do you download it? sounds like you have downloaded it but dont know how to work it?

All you do is start the programme and then click on "run cleaner" at the bottom of the window, and it will take anything from 1 min to 5mins depending on if you have ran this before or never done any maintenance on your pc.

For anti virus what are you using now?

By the way jamie great advice, all stuff i was aware of but i think most of it is beyond the average pc user who only knows how to turn it on and off and browse the net, hence why i didnt go into that much detail, but if they fuck anything up they know who to blame

Joking chap they should be alright with that

OMFG how can any one expect to take your serious with that statement AVG is easily thee worst avg you can install on your system and there detection rate is a joke at best.

You havent mentioned any thing about removing registry files when uninstalling programs that get left over, whys that? Thats a cause of your system slowing down! Most you have mentioned in your points can easily be done with ccleaner and takes all of 5mins to do instead the 4 hours you quoted lol

agreed avg is wank, avira pisses over everything at the mo closely followed by the new microsoft beta, he needs to go in regedit and clean the crap out of there but no really for a novice

Ditch Avast for Avira as there detection rate beats most paid for anti virus software
