an apposed piston engine doesnt have a cylinder head, just a a block with a crank at both ends, fuel, air and ignition is entered in the middle as the two pistons come towards each other, if that makes sense?

Aye ... I posted 12 seconds after he did
Never heard of an engine like that .. I could imagine a 2 stroke that works that way.

could be a 2 stroke quite easily then with no valves
, but I would imagine the stroke would have to be very short or the compression ratios would be mad!

the above are not boxer engines, boxers have the crank in the middle and the pistons outbound

but i imagine you can run masive compression ratios, as there are no cylinder heads/gaskets to worry about

A true Boxer engine has the pistons being pushed towards each other as in 2 boxers fighting.
Boxer has been mis-used to describe flat engines.

Like a porker Flat 6

no mate, this is a boxer engine
mot to be confused with the 180° V-engines

at first i thought he was on about steam engines, they work like that, one piston but 2 ends when they thought of the design to make use of the extra steam
but this looks like something totaly different

This will be the infamous Boxer variant where the right hand piston has a 17mm stroke and the left hand one has a 29mm stroke, due to the right hand conrod running on the eccentric crank centre line.

Still ultimately limited by PCP and the quality of fuel being used etc.... the normal rules would still apply.

As far as iam aware a Boxer or Horizontally opposed engine has the crank in the middle. Flat engine found in porkers.
The one you described (with Pics) I've never seen before ... I never went to
The history of Engine class.
Got to hand it to you: Pretty interesting thread ... The replys came to fast and some got mixed up

I am pressuming that is the difference between a Horizontally opposed engine and an opposed piston engine?
like the fairbanks morse opposed piston deltic

lol, the question was what did it power, not what power did it make.

Hi all,
Some 1960's Commer truck's used a 3 cylinder opposed piston 2 stroke supercharged diesel, that had a single crankshaft at 90 degree's to the cylinder's and below them, the piston's had conrod's connected to rocker arm's that had another set of conrod's connecting to the crankshaft !
This engine was known as a "Commer screamer" as it had a great sound.
Other than a rotary engine this was the last "unusual" type of engine on our road's.
The Deltic engine was made by Napier.
