Hello
not a good day for my s2 went for mot and failed on rust
1 offside front (chasis to floor) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength within 30cms of body mountings
2 nearside front (chasis to floor to inner sill) vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength within 30cms of body mountings
3 offfside and nearside rear (floor area) seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded
4 offfside and nearside rear (chasis) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
5 nearside rear (seat mounting)seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded
6 near side rear body or chasis has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength within 30cms of body mountings
7 nearside rear (outer sill) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
The sunroof has lots of rust around as well and bit of rust around the bumper
can this be repaired or am i better of looking to reshell or cut my loses and get rid off. Please help as i am not a mechanic and do not have any welding skill as such. any bodyshop people advise what sort of costs i would be looking at.
This is the car in question

reshell it mate, theres loads of tidy 1.1 shells that grandad has had...thought mine failed badly....you can always cut your losses and sell as spares or repairs,or just strip it,and make your money back that way!!!..though,if cheap enuf,i wud av brought the whole car for a turbo transplant in mine..
Sounds fucked - scrap it off and buy a propper car with a BMW badge
Seriously tho, be best cutting your losses here fella, might be an idea to find a good RST shell to reshell your good bits, or get another and break yours for spares for it?

mot tester doesn't know what he's doing, take it somewhere else
body mounts are only failable on vehichles with a seperate chassis and body, eg a landrover discovery,
I'm an mot tester btw

Man that sounds like a diasaster, didn't the car feel loose or weak?
these can be repaired but you need to find a welder who wont charge the earth for the work as this could cost you upto Ł500 depending on the amount of rust and dont forget once you start pealing off all the crap the damage will be even greater!
had the same thing on mine a few years back, funny enough that was a black car, and it required mega amounts but once it was all done the car felkt 10times stiffer or ridged!

ive seen and proberbly repaired worse, it only sounds bad becuase of thw ay its written
probeberly a coupe of small holes here and there that just need cutting out and welding up, most garages acn do this, doesnt require a bodyshop, but make sure its a garage that you trust that will cut it out and not plate it up
you could get another shell and reshell it, or cut your losses, just depends how much you like the car and if you plan on keeping it that bit longer

anything can be repaired as i know at the moment...
They are all getting this way unless looked after and garaged from the off...
Ive stripped 5 and all have been terrible once you start prodding and grinding, A reshell into a 1.1 stops it being a turbo so i wouldnt do that...
Strip the interior buy a grinder and a welder... Bit of practice and youre away.

has it got any mot left on it at all?
if so you could sell it with what mot is left; or i know of a decent welder in swindon who wont charge the earth if you can leave it with him (you are only down the road in slough)
i've directed him to this thread, he'll give you his opinion (his name is Costina) - but it doesnt sound good

either get your self a decent shell or strip it and restore the floorpan in one go, Either way you will still keep it please dont patch it up with untidy squares as thats just wrong for these modern classics kepp it alive whatever you decide
cant really tell from pictures but does not look that bad ..........did he offer to buy it?.............
we were welding 3 year old mk3 escorts with the battery in the passenger footwell...........as said above i cant see any holes.....

i wouldnt let re shelling it stop you mate! its hard to find a mint shell without paying top dollar for one! im in the process of re shelling my 3i into a 1300 shell! didnt want to do it but i love the mk4 too much to even consider another car!
it is very time consuming but its worth it in the end!
good luck with what ever you decide!

thats not even rusty, what the hell is the tester doing, you have took it to a right jobsworth there mate.
get it on axlestands strip and rub down the areas and see what its like hole wise, If there is any metal need cutting out then cut it get a welder round and shultz it up, Job done.
Wont take long atall, That does not need a reshell IMO
