no because the v5 wont be in your name and im guessing that if your buying it today the insurance database wont be updated to allow you to buy online anyway. i bought a motor last weekend, my insurer emailed a copy of my cert on saturday morning for me to print off and use at the post office with the tear off new keeper slip .

mainly for renewal purposes .you do get 5 days grace at the start of the month according to recent radio adds but as today is the 6th... you buy tax online 15 days before the old one expires or if youve just bought the vehicle from the post office 3 days before the start of the month to get the full 6 months or it gets backdated to the start off the last month if its any earlier than 3 days. i went through it all last week.
i doubt youll get done before monday . buy the motor and get down the post office monday morning

Ask the seller to tax it for you and pay the cost of tax disc on top; or is that too simple?

i've taxed cars plenty of time online and used the same day, as long as it shows as taxed, mot'd and insured on the police ANPR then you'd be extreamly unlucky to be done for failure to display

Surely its not the car owners problem if the shitty datebase takes too long or doesnt work certain days? if you have had it go through online or its taken your money then its bloody well taxed as far as im concerned

You are forgetting the bit that if you tax it online, it will go to the registered keepers' address, which will be the previous owner, NOT YOU. So, until HE decides to send it onto you (or sends it back himself to claim a refund ) then you will have no tax disc to display.

Plod know the database is majorly unreliable, no court in the land would convict you of the offence, no cps would run with it either, as they have to show intent to evade, that is the basis of the law they prosecute you for.
Same as if you take a cake from a shop without paying and then put it back ten mins later, they can't do you for theft, which is in legal terms to "permanently deprive" owner of property.
The database is so good, me other halfs car is still not shown as taxed, but was done in APRIL, at the DVLA local Office in Norwich, when stopped earlier in year in the car it showed as being uninsured, for me to drive, even though the cert clearly stated I was and had been renewed over 6 months previously.

I taxed my ST without having the propper V5.

I bought the car with 2 weeks left. Went to the Post Office with my new insurance certificate and green slip and taxed it there and then. Now im £215 lighter. You can only do this 2 working days before the end of the month. Then I got my propper V5 about a week later.

If you only have the green slip of the V5, your not supposed to do your tax online as it will most likely go to the previous owners address. Its cheaper to do it in the P.O anyway, you get charged £2.50 for paying on credit card online. But then, you can only pay with cash, cheque or debit card at the P.O.

ditto bigal.

IF you could tax it online (which you cant) you could use the thing the same day without displaying the tax disc perfecly legally
